I talked to a source today who relayed some interesting information …
The person I talked to said Ohio State co-offensive coordinator Tim Beck is definitely a strong candidate to take the Texas OC job. No surprise there. But this person heard this week that nothing had been finalized behind the scenes, and current Ohio State OC Ed Warinner could also be under consideration. Warinner’s name has been brought up before but it’s been more in passing, as most of the focus over the past few weeks has been on Beck.
Beck makes sense because he’s also Ohio State’s quarterback coach, while Warinner makes sense because he worked with Herman at Ohio State. Warinner was actually listed as co-OC/OL coach during Herman’s years with the Buckeyes … so the familiarity could help his status but looking at Warinner’s coaching history, most of his experience is coaching OL so that wouldn’t seem to fit with Derek Warehime already on the UT staff. Warinner did coach quarterbacks for a year at each of Kansas and Army, but those stints were several years ago and the majority of his job titles have included some sort of offensive line duties.
The source I spoke with felt very confident there had been conversations between UT and Tim Beck. He speculated that the same could be happening with Warinner, but said it’s hard to pin down much information because both men are playing things close to the vest.
There’s also this … one source close to the Ohio State program told me this week that he’s hearing it could be either Beck or Warinner, but there’s rumors floating around that a third candidate could also be under consideration. Who might that be? I’m all ears if you have any suggestions.
Ohio State plays Clemson on Saturday night. Should the Buckeyes lose that game, we could have our answer to what has been a bit of a quiet Texas OC search in the near future.
