I talked to a friend who covers the Chicago Bears about Stan Drayton on Tuesday, and he had nothing but positive things to say about the current running backs coach.
"It would be a huge blow to the Bears if he left," he said. "He's been great up here."
Drayton is credited with helping Bears rookie running back Jordan Howard finish with 1,611 overall yards and seven touchdowns this season. Howard rushed for 1,313 rushing yards and six touchdowns, plus had 298 receiving yards and one touchdown. He finished second to Dallas rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott (1,631 rushing yards) this season. In fact, it is the first time in NFL history two rookie running backs finished as the top two rushing leaders.
Last season, Drayton coached running back Matt Forte, who finished with 1,287 overall yards and seven touchdowns in 13 games.
From what I was told, players in Chicago like Drayton, and he is respected in facility. There is not a lot of buzz in Chicago about his possible departure, but that can be attributed to the Bears finishing 3-13 and being a horrible team.
"I don't know if he's leaving, but some guys love being in college," he said. "If he goes to Texas, he'll definitely do a great job down there."
When we find out more about Drayton possibly joining Tom Herman in Texas, we will pass it on.
