This is maddening. You watch the news, and experts (supposed ones) come out saying this disease poses less threat to kids than flu and there is no reason for kids not to be in school. Then you have studies revealing junior high age children are the most efficient spreaders. Then you have the recent experience in Texas, Florida, Arizona, and California where mild openings (some parties, bars and restaurants at half capacity when they were open) resulted in the overwhelming of health care systems. We know this virus spreads best in homes. We know it is airborne at times. We know all of these children have parents and that the ones most at risk of missing out on the benefit of attending are also most likely to be being raised by grandmother.
It is not really clear to me how this is seen by most. It is obvious from what is going on in Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong that if you do everything right you are still screwed. You can't re-open without acceleration of spread. In the USA school is preposterous for these disadvantaged kids with an unknown dad, a mom in prison, and an obese diabetic grandmother raising them and their cousins. It is a really crappy situation, but the science does not say children do not spread the disease even if they are not made too sick. It needs to be understood by people as we go into the fall that this disease is spread most often within households, and that children (10-19) are the most efficient spreaders.
