Dallas attorney Michael Lyons, a 1995 UT grad, joined my podcast this week to discuss the recent settlement agreement between Kansas and David Beaty. I wanted to hear from Lyons since Beaty was expected to join Tom Herman's staff as an analyst last year before Kansas looked for a loophole to avoid paying their former coach $3 million.
Here are the highlights:
- Lyons said this was the first case he had when a university looked for an excuse not to pay the buyout. He said eyebrows were raised across the country.
- During a conversation Lyons had with Greg Fenves, the former UT President explained to attorney why looking for ways not to pay your coach is bad for business.
- Lyons explained the things that surprised him about this case, which included allowing Kansas athletic director Jeff Long to be deposed (the attorney backed Long into a corner during his deposition). He was also surprised about how Kansas allegedly put words into the mouth of former Kansas assistant coach Garrett Riley, brother of Oklahoma football coach Lincoln Riley.
- We talked about the need for the NCAA investigation into Kansas to conclude for Beaty to get back into coaching. Lyons explained the allegations by Kansas against his client, and the issues with each claim.
- Two of Lyons' best Longhorn memories being in attendance for 4th-and-5 in the Rose Bowl, and on the sidelines for Stonie Clark's goal line tackle against Oklahoma in 1994.
