That was one hell of a performance by Iowa State against Kansas State. If you enjoy witnessing beatdowns, that was definitely a game to watch. Iowa State played its best game of the season during a 45-0 victory. Matt Campbell’s team informed Longhorn nation it is coming to Austin with bad intentions this week.

No excuses.

Beat Iowa State.

Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy had arguably his best of the season, completing 16 of 20 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns. Breece Hall rushed 15 times for 135 yards and increased his nation’s leading rushing yards total to 1,169 yards (how the heck does Iowa State keep producing elite running backs?).

No excuses.

Linebacker Mike Rose had seven tackles, one sack, three tackles for loss, an interception and a quarterback hurry.

Here is what the Des Moines Register said:

“I’ve been bullish about Michael, really, from the TCU game on,” coach Matt Campbell said Saturday night. “I just believe that Michael is one of the best defensive players that I’ve had the opportunity to coach. The consistency that he has played with — I don’t know that there’s someone that’s playing as well as what he has consistently played for the entirety of the year. I’m obviously not sitting there watching everybody play college football, but I sure know what he’s meant to this program and to this team. He’s as special as I’ve ever been around, and maybe as special as I’ve seen.”

“Rose led a defense that pitched its first shutout since 45-0 against Kansas in 2017. He was all over the field with an A.J. Klein-like performance. He leads the Big 12 in interceptions. He’s among the leaders in tackles, but there’s more.

“He spoiled the Wildcats’ first drive of the second half, with a speedy quarterback chase down on third down.”

No excuses.

Beat Iowa State.

“I think all good football teams want to play good football in November and we’ve played two games in the month of November up until this point and I’ve seen a lot of really positive growth,” Campbell said after the win. “I think a real challenge for football teams this time of year is can you continue to get better. I think you see us improving and that part is really big for our football team and the real challenge is can you continue to do those things. So, I think we’ll continue to find out a lot about ourselves as we continue on this journey.”

No excuses.

Texas is three wins away from the Big 12 championship game. Three wins away from an 8-2 season. That .800 winning percentage will be the team’s highest since the 2009 national title runner-up season when Texas finished 13-1 (.929 winning percentage).

Yes, I am serious.

Winning-Percentage.jpg

If Texas wins the next three games, it will finish the regular season on a six-game win streak after a 2-2 start.

Heck, there is only one team with a pulse remaining on its schedule.

After Iowa State, Texas will travel to face Kansas State. Did you see what Kansas State looks like without quarterback Skylar Thompson, who is out of the regular season with an upper-body injury, on Saturday? Kansas State did not score. That should tell you everything.

After Kansas State, Texas ends the season against Kansas. The Jayhawks are currently winless, and I do not anticipate Les Miles’ team defeating TCU at home or Texas Tech in Lubbock prior to the season finale. Hell, Kansas could not defeat Covid-19 this past week. Texas should beat Kansas like a classic Kimbo Slice backyard fight.

No excuses.

Beat Iowa State.

If Texas defeats Iowa State, there is a clear path to a second Big 12 title game appearance in three years. Texas owns the tiebreaker against Oklahoma State. It will own the tiebreaker against Iowa State.

Texas has not played a game since defeating West Virginia on November 7. That is three weeks without a game. It means Texas should enter this contest against Iowa State healthier than it has been in weeks. Receiver Joshua Moore (shoulder) was going to be a game-day decision this past Saturday, but should be ready to play next weekend. The unexpected bye week had to help Keondre Coburn (minor high ankle sprain) and Jordan Whittington (hip flexor). Both were expected to play this past Saturday and now have a chance to be at 100 percent.

No excuses.

In addition, Longhorn football coach Tom Herman received extra time to prepare for Iowa State after Kansas was postponed on Wednesday.

If you missed what I posted in the War Room, here is a recap of how the practice schedule was readjusted this past week:

“According to my sources, Texas practiced for an hour on Wednesday – a little more than two hours after learning the game was pushed back – in shorts and helmets. Nobody inside the building wanted to waste a practice day.

“However, the schedule has been altered.

“Longhorn players were given Thursday off so the staff could spend all day game-planning, much like a Monday.

“Texas will have an abbreviated practice on Friday and introduce Iowa State to the players. However, I learned Iowa State prep will be minimal on that day.

“On Saturday, the Longhorns will practice for two hours, and there will be a lot of scout team work that day. The game plan will be installed, mainly first and second-down.

“Players will have Sunday off.

“Monday will be a normal practice day.”

Herman’s best coaching performances have occurred when he has time to prepare.

His Houston team knocked off Florida State in the Peach Bowl in 2015. He is undefeated in bowl games at Texas, with wins against Missouri (Texas Bowl), Georgia (Sugar Bowl) and Utah (Alamo Bowl).

In addition, Herman has a 4-1 record after bye weeks at Texas.

2017 – defeated Iowa State, 17-7, after a loss against USC.

2018 – defeated by Oklahoma State, 38-35, after a win against Baylor (Kris Boyd, Davante Davis and Lil’ Jordan Humphrey were suspended for a portion of the Cowboys game after violating team rules).

2019 – defeated West Virginia (42-31) and Kansas State (27-24) after byes.

2020 – defeated Baylor, 27-16, after a loss against Oklahoma.

No excuses.

Beat Iowa State.

Longhorn quarterback Sam Ehlinger entered this season as a Heisman Trophy candidate, but has struggled. He is not the best quarterback in his conference. However, Ehlinger received three weeks to correct his accuracy issues, and can redeem himself with a win against Iowa State. This is the game a senior quarterback must win at home.

Herman said reminded us quite often that his seven new coaches did not have a spring practice to work with their players. Plus, the Longhorns had only two scrimmages prior to this season.

Well, the staff was gifted three weeks of practice, which should make up for the time missed this offseason. Chris Ash’s defense has improved throughout the season, and Mike Yurcich received extra time to work on his offense.

No excuses.

This is when Texas has to live up hype. I do not want to hear anyone say, “other teams get up for us” after a loss anymore. Opposing teams mark Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame and Ohio State on their calendars every year. You know what happens? The great teams remind everyone else in their conference why they aren’t Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame or Ohio State.

By the way, if you know a team is going to play like it is their Super Bowl, then approach the same game with that same energy.

No excuses.

Beat Iowa State.

Clearly, Iowa State is a good team. The Cyclones are well-coached. They have great athletes. Longhorn fans would love for Texas to curb-stomp Iowa State on Black Friday. It is highly unlikely.

If Texas wins, the narrative of this season starts to shift, and Herman may begin to close the door of opportunity on those who want him removed. I am not convinced Texas removes Herman after an eight-win season, even though I know some of you will say it should not matter. Trent Johnson had to finished 8-64 in the Big 12 (50-79 overall) for Chris Del Conte to fire the former men's basketball coach at TCU. His resume does not look like a person who would fire a coach who finishes 8-2 in the regular season.

However, a loss could makes Del Conte's job easier.

No excuses.

Sports On A Dime

1. CBSSports.com recently predicted Texas would face Kentucky in the Liberty Bowl (Memphis) on December 31, but that would surprise me. The Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl are college playoff games this year, and it is unlikely the Big 12 will have a team in the playoffs. Here is the relevant bowl game criteria:

Once the CFP has filled its bowl slots, Big 12 bowl partners will make selections from the remaining bowl eligible teams. Following is the order of selection. A bowl may pick from any available teams when it reaches its spot in the selection order.

Valero Alamo Bowl (San Antonio)
Cheez-It Bowl (Arizona)
Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl (Houston)
AutoZone Liberty Bowl (Memphis)
Guaranteed Rate (Arizona)
Lockheed Martin Armed Forces (Fort Worth)

If the Alamo Bowl, which is played on December 29, does not select Texas, the Texas Bowl, played on December 31, will likely snag the Longhorns. The Texas Bowl will not pass on guaranteed money.

2. Winning a Big 12 title will be Sam Ehlinger’s best award, but it is great to have the individual recognition

3. It is hard to argue against the development of several defensive players this season. I think this will make the next Ta’Quon Graham Fan Club meeting hosted by @DustinMcComas a fantastic party – BYOB

4. I am a huge Greg Brown III fan, but can do without seeing him risking his health (Covid-19 and injuries) outside of a team setting. Brown doesn’t gain anything by beating down a group of rec league players.

5. This was a good pass breakup by Quandre Diggs on Thursday, but we remember when he laid out former Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes

6. Here is a recap of Iowa State’s victory if you missed it:

7. I respect Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy for his ability to develop talent, but there is no denying Oklahoma owns him. Of course, Oklahoma has owned Texas, so maybe I should take it light on Gundy.

8. Interviews like this are specifically designed to get the general public interested in an upcoming fight. It is the typical media tour. However, I must admit something. I have gone from zero interest in watching Mike Tyson versus Roy Jones Jr. on November 28 to all chips in. Even if it ends up being a circus, I love boxing too much to sit this one out.

9. Okay, F1 fans, help me out since I am still learning about the sport. Lewis Hamilton or Michael Schumacher?

10. I was recently featured on Youngblood’s website, which is actually a watchmaker company. It is definitely a different world when the interviewer because the interviewee, but I appreciate the recognition. If you collect watches, Youngblood’s has a unique merchandise worth looking into.
