Here are the highlights of Texas offensive coordinator Tim Beck’s press conference after practice on Wednesday.
--- After watching the film, Beck said his guys played hard, and he believes the offensive line was outstanding. He also liked his unit’s effort and toughness.
--- Beck said Sam Cosmi and Derek Kerstetter are the best tackle combo he has coached during his tenure at Texas when asked if that was accurate. Beck said, “Well, I think Herb [Hand] takes a lot of credit. I think that he's done a great job with those guys. Sam played left tackle a lot of his career. As far as Derek, I think two years ago, he was our starting right tackle. It's not like he hasn't played the position at the collegiate level. I think a lot of people are missing our guards. Those guys are good now. I mean, physical, they can move. They love contact, and they love just hitting people. Obviously, we're super strong at the center with Shack [Zach Shackelford}. So, I really like that group.”
--- When asked about LSU taking Collin Johnson out of the game, Beck said there were matchups they did not convert on. However, Beck said they could have moved Johnson around more than he did.
--- Beck's response when asked if he had any concerns about being too predictable around the goal line: “You know, sometimes, maybe. I don't know. I think that there's enough formations, enough different things that we do out of those formations, you still got to prepare for everything, right? One minute we're talking about how great Devin's playing, and throw the ball to Collin, and the next minute we're talking about Sam [Ehlinger] running it. What are you going to do? Then we just try to go off of that. You go into a plan based on what you see on film. It doesn't always equate that that plan is what they're going to do against you. You have to try to make adjustments. I thought as a staff, we made great adjustments at halftime because they were different than what we thought, or had prepared for, and it showed in the second half.”
--- Beck on freshman running back Roschon Johnson: “I loved his energy. He brought a lot of energy. He wasn't shy at all. Sometimes you want to get a true freshman in a big game like that. He was up to the moment, and I think that surprised all of us a little bit I kind of figured maybe he might be a little bit caught in the lights, so to speak, but he didn't. Played really well and played hard. Made some really nice plays in the course of the game. Some protection thing. Played really well for us.”
--- Beck it is hard to replace Andrew Beck, and does not believe he can fairly assess Cade Brewer or Reese Leitao right now. However, he said both guys are playing well.
--- Beck said having freshman Jake Smith coming off the bench is definitely a luxury for this offense.
--- Beck on receiver Brennan Eagles: “He's been playing really well. Again, that threat to the field. Now you got to worry about Collin Johnson. I know we have the leading receiver I think in the Big 12 in Devin [Duvernay], and you have Brennan Eagles, who I don't know what he's averaging per catch, but he has a lot of yards and a lot of touchdowns.”
