Here are the highlights of Texas offensive coordinator Tim Beck’s media availability after Wednesday’s practice:
- Beck did not have a cast on his arm during this week’s press conference. He has one more week of medication and should be done after that.
- When asked about Sam Ehlinger, Beck said, “He continues to practice, and doing well. We’ll just kind of see how things progress through the rest of the week. Coach (Tom Herman) and I will visit. I think coach will have more information for you guys tomorrow [Thursday], I think.”
- Beck on receiver Collin Johnson playing more aggressively this season: “Having done this for a while, I always revert back to he can focus a little bit more on his individual game, mentally and emotionally, as opposed to what route do I have on this, or what route on this? When guys learn a system for the first time, you can do a lot more of the whys and the hows instead of the whats. I see that in him. He’s done a tremendous job, as you notice, on the 50-50 balls. Fighting for body control, going up and getting the ball. Those are all things I know coach [Drew] Mehringer and coach [Corby] Meekins have worked with him on, and that was an area he wanted to work and get better at. He did, he has, and it has allowed him to make the plays that he’s made, too.”
- Beck on Oklahoma State’s pass rush: “They do a great job using 94 [Jordan Brailford]. He moves him around to different places. He tries to get him singled up in either on alignment or on a back, which isn’t a good matchup at all if he’s going against a running back. They’ve created some exotic pressures in their third-down situations. They’ve done a good job of scheming and game planning. We expect something different because each game they have a little twist to something. It’s hard to prepare for everything, but we try to fall back on our rules of what we need to do in terms of our pass protection, and be able to figure them out as the game goes.”
- Beck feels good about the pass protection abilities of Keaontay Ingram and Tre Watson.
- Beck’s assessment of Shane Buechele’s performance against Baylor: “I thought Shane did a nice job coming in. He hit some big plays for us when we needed them. Some crucial third-down plays. He hit Collin when we needed it on the go-route. They didn’t give us many opportunities to throw the ball down the field. A lot of double-coverage, so, when we got that, he took advantage of it. That’s key in our offense right now. A lot of teams are trying to take those guys away from us by doubling them. When we get those opportunities, we got to hit them, and he did. He missed a couple of protection calls that could have helped a little bit. I think he played a little bit … I told him this, I kept telling him this on the headset, cut it loose. We started doing it at the end of the game. We kind of had that throughout the game. I think he was playing cautious. You’ve always hear it, playing to not lose as opposed to playing to win. He needed to just cut it loose and throw the ball out there. He started doing it some in the second half there. On the second to last drive, we went right down the field. He needs to do that. He’s good at doing that. That part I would have liked to see him do a little bit more.”
- Cameron Rising has received more reps this week, and Beck said the freshman quarterback as done a nice job. Beck said each quarterback is engaged every week, and he quizzes each passer about situational conditions.
- Beck on Rising: “He’s got good leadership to him. He’s got a really live arm. I think he does have good football instincts.”
