“An easy way to get people to like you is to make them laugh.” — Isla Fisher
When I started out in my sales career, I had to cold call on businesses in Austin. I was selling copiers and fax machines. My pitch was to set up an in-office demonstration of one of the machines in our portfolio. The hardest part of my job was to get in the door and pass the receptionist to office manager. I had to learn how to make friends easily or I would not make my quota.
I’d come across signs that read something like… “We shoot every third salesman, and the second one just left!” So, I had to come up with some response to try to get the receptionist to like me right off the bat. After reading the previous sign, I said to the receptionist, so what happens to the FIRST salesman? That usually gave me a chuckle, which helped me break the ice and I was able to tell them why I was there.
Other times humor has worked is when I’d get into an argument with my wife. If things were going sour, I would try to make a remark that would make her laugh and that usually stops the argument in its tracks.
Humor is a great tool to diffuse a tense situation.
Psalm 126:2 & Proverbs 17:22
Hope you have a weekend full of laughter!
