“God Won’t Give You More Than You Can Handle” (Is this true?)

In my grief recovery practice, I hear this phrase uttered by my clients as one of the well-meaning comments others say to them when they are grieving over a loss.

This is one of those “intellectual comments” that can ring hallow to grievers. I personally don’t believe the title is a true statement. My belief may be controversial to some, but hear me out as to my reasoning.

We’ve had many TG’s that talk about how our Creator is with us through the good times and bad. So, if God doesn’t give us/allow us more than we can handle, then why would we need God?

I believe the latter question is actually the answer. Our Creator is there when we are at our weakest. What we can’t do on our own, He can accomplish. Some of my biggest growth spurts in my faith were the times when I was overwhelmed with troubles, i.e. I couldn’t handle them on my own.

As we’ve discussed before, we are not guaranteed a trouble free life, quite the opposite in fact, but we have an eternal companion to carry us when we are unable to take another step forward. Don’t try to go it alone, keep the communication line open with THE ONE who is faithful, even when our faith tank has dwindled to empty.
