“Leadership is a matter of having people look at you and gain confidence…If you’re in control, they’re in control.”—Tom Landry

When I read this quote, I immediately thought about the last time we won a national championship. That year, there wasn’t a game I thought we would lose. My confidence as a Longhorn fan was off the charts. Why? Because we had Vince Young at QB. It wasn’t just his athletic ability. He oozed confidence. He was so calm and collected. I can’t recall at any time seeing fear in his eyes.

This type of leadership had to inspire the rest of the team. When things got dicey, like when we were down at halftime against OSU or when USC took a 12-point lead with a little over 6 minutes left in the championship game, I remember calling my Dad at that moment and he said, “Not to worry, Vince Young will win the game!” When our defense stopped White on the 4th down, did any of you doubt Vince would score a TD? I had no doubt, my confidence was due to the leadership of Vince Young.

This is the type of leader I strive to be, for my family and when I was a business leader. There are times of crisis when people look to you for assurance and strength. These are times when I look to my leader, my Creator, for where I am weak, He is strong.

Here’s to the first of many victories for our Longhorns.
