Texas football coach Tom Herman appeared on a Big 12 football coaches spring teleconference on Tuesday. Here are the highlights of his 10-minute session:

--- Herman was asked about the transfer portal. He said anything that helps and favors student athletes is for the good. He said they have not taken anyone from the transfer portal, but noted they have a grad transfer coming in.

--- Herman was asked if the Sugar Bowl provided to boost this spring and said, “Our approach to coming off a really quality season has been this year’s team can learn a lot of lessons from last year’s team, good and bad. That team had some short-comings, and we can try to improve on where that team excelled, and try to enhance, but last year’s team will never be referred to as me or us. We didn’t win the Sugar Bowl last year. That was last year’s team. We are the 2019 team, and we have a lot of work to do. Those of us that were on last year’s team can certainly learn some lessons from it.”

--- Herman said Sam Ehlinger has a ton of things to work on, like getting the ball out quicker during RPO situations. Also, throwing the deep ball better is an area of where Ehlinger can improve because of the various speeds at receiver, according to Herman.

--- Herman was asked how close is the program to his vision. He said he'll never say they are at where they need to be. They are constantly evolving and getting closer each day, according to Herman. However, Herman added they have a lot of talent young and inexperienced players who believe in their way of doing things and enjoy coming to work every day.

--- Herman said Parker Braun brings experience and toughness. He said Braun will have his work cut out for him to get into the starting lineup. Herman expects there will be an adjustment period for Braun, but said they wouldn't have signed him if he couldn't possibly come in and help immediately.

“He’s a guy that’s played a lot of football,” Herman said. “He’s excited about continuing his career. He’s going to have his work cut out for him to beat out some guys to earn his way into the starting lineup, especially coming from an offense that he spent the last three years of his career doing something different than what we’re going to ask him to do. There will be an adjustment period for him. The game is really fast in the Big 12. I’m sure it is in the ACC as well.”

--- Herman said the Big 12 is a good conference for quarterbacks. He compliments the NFL for adapting to the college quarterbacks and their style.

--- Herman said adding four coaches with national championships on their resume infuses some new blood and energy and brings the competition level up.
