If you had the ability to change 5 things as President, what would you do and in what order would it be most important to you? Here's mine:
1. Term limits for Congress and the President. I would give the house 3 year terms, the Senate 5 year terms and the President one 6 year term. I think one of the biggest problems in our system in general is pandering for votes, running for re-election and having stale ideas. Not having term limits only keeps people like Nancy Pelosi, a career politician born to a family of career politicians, in charge of governing and crafting legislation. This is not good for the American people.
2. Overturn Citizen's United. Truly an abomination of a decision that has had a major negative impact on our election process. This has only hurt our Democracy IMO.
3. Fix the immigration system. I am someone who thinks we need pretty radical immigration reform. Mainly, we need to make it much easier for people to be allowed in and much tougher for illegal immigration to occur. It appears very obvious that something like this simply will not happen with Congress in its current form.
4. Put an age limit of Supreme Court justices. The idea behind life terms for the SCOTUS was probably well intended, but it is being completely abused in my eyes. Keeping these people around in their mid to upper 80's is simply ridiculous. No one that age should be deciding such monumental and important issues in a country whose population is much, much younger at a time when things have never been more different than they were just 20-30 years prior.
5. Legalize marijuana and take it off the list of schedule 1 drugs. This impact that making marijuana illegal has been felt throughout this country in a negative way. We can argue all day about whether or not it is bad for you, but the truth is that you can't in any way convince me that it's worse for you than other legal prescription drugs or especially alcohol. The extreme double standard for making this illegal is astounding. This thing was demonized back when information was quite frankly not readily available as it is today...the ultimate propaganda machine made it illegal in this country and it should fixed soon.
I'm sure there are some things I'm missing, but this would be a pretty good start for some clear issues that need to be tackled to restore a little sense into our government.
