This is the first week every healthy Longhorn football player can fully participate in voluntary workouts, and it appears to be going well.
The first group of players arrived on June 8 and were allowed to participate in the offseason program if they did not test positive for COVID-19. The second group arrived on June 15 and were tested, too. Those players were required to wait a week before joining the workouts.
This is the first week every healthy player can workout. The good news - for Longhorn fans and staff members - is the majority of players stayed in shape while away from campus.
According to my sources, it appears most players kept up with the workouts prescribed by strength and conditioning coach Yancy McKnight after UT's campus closed in March. My sources previously expressed to me they hoped 80 percent of players show up in shape, with only 20 percent needing to catch up. It is hard to get an accurate number after one day of full workouts, but nobody I checked in with appears concerned about the team's physical shape. They are very pleased with the discipline and dedication of their players while away from campus.
Players are working out Monday through Friday each week. They will lift on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. They will run on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Texas announced 13 football players had tested positive for COVID-19 as of Thursday. I do not have an updated number, and was told UT's priority is to make sure parents learn about the positive cases through Texas instead of the media.
I will keep you posted.
