You could go back to 1989 and think we won the Cold War. Everyone thought it was just a matter of time for China, and Bush did not push too hard after the massacre because of his personal ties and due to the fact he thought they would be on the wrong side of history.
Here we are 30 years later and the majority of Democrats favor socialism over capitalism and China has surpassed us if you measure GDP in PPP. China is not trying to export socialism as much as power, and the socialists here seem more bent on getting as much out of the capitalists as they can rather than doing the actual work of running state enterprises, but this is never how I would have imagined 2019 in 1989.
