My grandson graduated top 5 in his class at Lackland Master at Arms training and got his orders for Whidbey Island NAS in Washington State

Anyone know about this place? At least he will get to see the Pirate's team play ball if not to far away

Congrats, FBH. I know you are rightfully proud.
Very! I found out the base is right at Canuck border at Wash State about a hr flight to Anchorage, so I guess he can come on weekends...At least he will be close to Family

Congratulations. I was in the Navy stationed at Whidbey for a few years when I flew P3's. It's a great area - about 70 miles from Seattle and the same distance to Vancouver, BC. If he's single, it's a little quiet and you have to get out on weekends. If not, plenty of things to do outdoors. It's a beautiful area with Puget Sound, easy access to the San Juan Islands and the Cascade Mountains. It's about 2 hours or so to get to the Olympic Peninsula. You should plan on visiting him... no one ever came to visit me from home (Austin) when I was there and would have loved to have them out.

That's one big Master at Arms - he'll keep the peace.

It's been 20 years, so I'm sure a lot has changed. I would start in Oak Harbor which is where the base is located and where most families live. It's a a really nice Navy town - not overgrown with pawnshops, used car dealers, etc... It's decent size (I think it had a Walmart) and was very family/Navy oriented. I heard the town works really hard to stay a nice community and keep the riff-raff out. Base housing may also be available and was high quality at the time.

We lived about 20 miles north in Anacortes. Beautiful drive to work every morning over Deception Pass bridge and I could drive onto base through the back gate. I never had problems with weather, but I heard it could ice during a bad winter storm and keep you from getting on base. It was a great coastal town that was felt far-removed from the Navy. My wife worked at the local hospital and there's a lot of restaurants and tourist. It was also quicker access to I-5 and the larger towns in the area (Mount Vernon, Bellingham). I'm sure the town is probably pretty expensive now, but maybe worth looking into depending on what they're looking for and budget. Anything south of Oak Harbor down the island seemed pretty isolated to me. It was harder to get to Seattle or anywhere else without a haul.

I'm sure he'll love it, my wife and I have great memories of our two years in the area.

He can take mil-air from his base to Elmendorf if they've got any transport flights going back and forth.

The best way to drive from Corpus would take the 37 to the 35 north and hop across to 287 I think to the 40. Take that across to Barstow. Then take the 58 to Bakersfield. Then to 99 north to Sacramento and then take I-5 all the way up. That's the route I use to take when I was stationed in Bremerton. I still take that route from Northern California to Corpus
