Texas could be in the conference championship game
If the Longhorns qualify for the playoffs, but not as 1 of the top 4, then they could potentially have 3 playoff games, including the national championship game.
That's a 16-game season for young men who are 18-23 years old.
That's a lot. College football is in a world now that is much the same as the pro game, in which a team's injury situation sustained over a long season can make or break a team's chances.
This Longhorns team is ridiculously deep with quality talent, thanks to the tremendous recruiting by Sark and his assistant coaches over the past 4 years, along with the simply outstanding record of picking up critical talent from the portal at key positions. Thus, unlike some of the other top teams this year, our team is well positioned to maintain excellence even if injuries hit some key players, as we have already seen at both the RB and QB positions.
It's not only a different game now for the players, but for the coaches as well. And we are absolutely blessed with a head coach now who has the complete skill set to manage every aspect of the job. Few other programs are lucky enough to have such a coach, including our main rivals. Looking around the SEC, programs like Georgia, Ole Miss and maybe Alabama have head coaches with similarly outstanding skill sets. Tennessee and Missouri might, but the jury is still out. None of the others appear to be so fortunate.
In the end, UT's current ideal situation is a tribute to not only Chris Del Conte, but also to University President Jay Hartzell and the members of the Board of Regents.
Enjoy this glorious time while we have it. I've been a fan of UT football since the mid-1960s, and can assure you that the periods in which Longhorns football has enjoyed such a convergence of excellence and focus at all the key positions necessary for success have been too few, and overly long between.
