Spring football was supposed to give Longhorn tight end Reese Leitao an opportunity to find a role in Chris Ash's defense. Meanwhile, tight end Malcolm Epps was going to receive defensive reps.
Leitao did switch to defense, but Epps remains in the tight end room.
According to my sources, Leitao found a home at the Jack position during winter conditioning. Leitao was among the backups playing behind Joseph Ossai. Texas conducted several walk-through practices during the winter, and Leitao's position switch was solidified.
However, the plan to give Epps reps as a pass-rusher has been delayed due to the lack of on-the-field practices. I learned Epps' potential move will be determined by the amount of practices Texas has before the season opener. If Texas receives plenty of practice time before game one, Epps will have a shot to play on defense. If not, Epps will remain at tight end this season.
I will keep you posted.
