Just from a fan's perspective (and I would like to get more knowledgeable people to comment).
Would it be:
1) A real commitment by the Administration to win,
2) A great coaching staff, coaches and support staff,
3) Recruiting,
4) An exciting schedule,
in that order.
Where do we stand on these components?
It appears to me that:
1) The Administration has finally made an obvious commitment to win with the investment in facilities, staffing spending freely on
every aspect of the program. The decision to replace a coach ( who had a record of 7-3, which would have been 10-3 accept for the three cancelled games because of the virus) and his staff at a high cost to upgrade the coaching, to me was an obvious sign that the Administration had made this commitment.
2) A great coaching staff must have solid schemes for both offense, defense and special teams but must be able to teach these schemes to the players. They must not only teach the schemes but also the fundamentals of football while developing the players to be the best they can be. We have seen the schemes Sark has on offense, we have seen the development of his players and we have seen the game plans and play calling he produces. He has hired a excellent defensive coordinator known for his schemes, developing defenses and players ( history of NFL drafts). The Special Team's coordinator and the rest of his staff are known for their development and coaching skills. And as great recruiters.
3) Recruiting - You win with the Jimmy's and Joe's. Texas has been behind the eight ball because they have played on an uneven playing field as Texas has refused to play the game of buying players. Now we have the LIN, will that offset cash payments? I have my doubts but it will help. In addition to showing that we will have the best facilities and will provide the best of everything legal including medical, nutritional, living quarters, travel, etc, we need to be the best at identifying and evaluating prospective recruits. We also have to give them a national spotlight. That brings us to the last item on my list,
4) An exciting schedule. Right now we have one national game and the OU game that is of high national interest. We only have one rivalry. The new 12 team playoff will help that but we need more rivalry games and I don't want to play ATM. We used to have a rivalry game with a neighboring state, Arkansas. It was a game that had national interest because of the hate Arkansas had for the state of Texas. Our big national game year before last was against LSU, a neighboring state and a big game, and a natural rival. That was an exciting game and was in the national spotlight. Kids not only want to be in the spotlight but the spotlight increases the value of our brand.
Until the conferences are restructured we need to do the best we can with the out of conference games. Arkansas and LSU might be good rivalries.
OK, I am tired of waiting for good recruiting news and will read this in the morning. Hope a lot of will set me straight.
