It's getting to be that time of the year once again, as fall camp breaks and in-season practices start, when Coach Herman is going to have to call in a few players to let them know they're going to be wearing scout team jerseys to practice.
And with the new redshirt rule allowing prospective redshirt candidates to participate in up to four games, the good news is that some of these players will get a chance to not only preserve a year of eligibility but also give us (and more importantly, their coaches) a look at them in game situations. I'll break the groups as I project them in to four tiers:
Not going to redshirt:
S Caden Sterns - the lock of all locks on the list, Sterns enters the season a starter on defense and one of the unit's more exciting players.
RB Keaontay Ingram - he might even get the first touch of any Texas RB in 2018.
LB Ayodele Adeoye - he won't redshirt because unlike some of these other guys who have come in looking good, he's going to be a key factor on at least the two deep once healthy again.
WR Brennan Eagles - he's the No.2 X WR behind Collin Johnson and will play early and often.
ATH D'Shawn Jamison - he's been too involved on returns and as a gadget player on offense to be a guy who we don't see as headed for a full year of work, although he's closer to not being on this list than the other four.

Probably not going to redshirt:
CB Anthony Cook - he's an injury away from starting or at least being "next man up" at one of the outside corners.
S B.J. Foster and Demarvion Overshown - the safe bet would be at least one of these guys competing for the dime-package spot as the extra safety and both could also factor in heavily on special teams. (Of course Overshown's injury situation is one to monitor).
WR Joshua Moore - Maybe he'll be one of these guys we only see in four games, but he's been pretty involved with the first two groups thus far through camp.
Will likely redshirt, but will see good run during the season:
OL Junior Angilau - if he doesn't redshirt it will mean injury woes struck the OL once again and we're likely in big trouble.
QB Casey Thompson and Cameron Rising - both of them should redshirt, but you're crazy if you don't think Herman will use every opportunity possible to get real-game evaluations on both.
CB Jalen Green - he's going to be a good one for Texas, but doesn't project to be an urgent need when looking at positional depth.
WR Al'Vonte Woodard - we'll see him a good bit thanks to the new redshirt rule, but he seems like the type of player this rule was made for - a lot of promise, but probably not quite ready.
DT Keondre Coburn and Moro Ojomo - I was thinking of putting Coburn into the next category up, but the fact is it would take an injury to Chris Nelson or Gerald Wilbon to make it likely that he doesn't redshirt.
OLB/EDGE Joseph Assai and Michael Williams - both will be reserve role players we should expect to see get good looks at times in the season, but since both are pegged as outside LBs (B-Backers) in this system, there simply isn't a need for that much available game-to-game depth at their position as the defense operates in dime so much.
WR Malcolm Epps - in a perfect world, he's a definite redshirt guy, but as things stand, he's the No.3 X WR on the team.
Will redshirt and see limited run during the season:
OL Rafiti Ghirmai, Reese Moore, Christian Jones
LB Byron Vaughns
