Here are a few immediate thoughts and reactions to Steve Sarkisian's first game-week press conference heading into the 2023 season opener versus the Rice Owls at 2:30pm central time in the friendly confines of DKR:

- Alex Loeb lets us know that Texas has a 43% chance to win the th Big 12 according to ESPN analytics. ALEX'S THOUGHTS: Sportsbetting.com shows the implied odds are actually better than that at around 52% across sportsbooks - the books know that Texas fans LOVE betting on their Horns and price them as such.

- As a side note, it's just weird to see Texas with 41 first-place votes in the Big 12 and Oklahoma with .... 4.

- Horns are tied for the 4th-best odds to make the CFP per ESPN Analytics. ALEX'S THOUGHTS: Please nobody tell the players. They need to play like underdogs and not frontrunners based on how we've seen games go sideways after great starts. No resting on laurels. No buying hype or getting high on your own supply. This team hasn't done anything yet and that should be the attitude.

- Cole Hutson with a funny joke to Ewers in a vignette shown by LHN while waiting for Sark: "What do you call a fake noodle? .... an Im-Pasta." lmao.

- Sark calls Rice a veteran opponent with a ton of experience; "hard-nosed and tough with intricate schemes." ALEX'S THOUGHTS: Exactly the attitude. No cupcakes, prepare like you're David vs. Goliath every week.

- Injuries - Mo Blackwell will be down a few weeks. "Everyone else on the roster will be available to us." ALEX'S THOUGHTS: I guess Savion Red is back from the shoulder injury? That would be good news. He was in a sling just 10 days or so again per a few sources.

- Danny Davis asked Sark what he wanted to see outside of a win: Substitution errors, coverage on returns, penalties, etc. ALEX'S THOUGHTS: kick coverage -- that will be interesting to follow as it's not really anything we heard much about being an issue through camp. It's obviously front of mind for Sark.

- Dennis De La Pena asked about the biggest concern: Sark mentioned the RBs and losing the guys last year. Said he's really interested to see how that is going to look. ALEX'S THOUGHTS: So am I. I think CJ Baxter will turn heads.

- Chip asked about Brooks vs. Baxter and the depth chart: Sark said they have a good idea now. The players know where they stand at this point based on how they're being used in practice. Said both have a physical running style, elusive in the open field, good receiving skills and smart. ALEX'S THOUGHTS: Are we not going to get an official depth chart today?

- Ced Golden asked how Sark challenged his older guys prior to camp: Always tries to talk to older players early on so the young guys see that they are coaching everybody the same way and lets the older guys know they'll have a big say in how the movie script of the season is going to go -- setting that tone. ALEX'S THOUGHTS: Does no one care about the depth chart?

- Can anything Rice do prepare you for Alabama? Sark said "I don't know." ALEX'S THOUGHTS: lol.

- New KXAN guy asked if the team is feeling urgency to win. ALEX'S THOUGHTS: We're to the useless questions portion of the PC it seems.

- Anwar asked about the backup QB, RB depth chart, CB as well (thank you Anwar, my God): "That's why we practice throughout the week. Who do we feel like come Thursday (Arch vs. Maalik, RB, corner) .. we'll see. Said they have four corners who can show him through the week who's ready to play. ALEX'S THOUGHTS: Sounds like we get the official depth chart Thursday ... if we get one at all.

- Sark said both DJ Campbell and Cole Hutson "will play" versus Rice at RG. ALEX'S THOUGHTS: Looks like they'll give them both opportunities on Saturday, but what that doesn't mean much as everyone will play versus Rice unless things are disastrous. Campbell was the starter at RG from the third or fourth practice on and didn't give up the job.

- Ed Clements asked if he enjoys the high expectations of the team: "I enjoy it, we all want to be on good teams ... it is enjoyable to know that group of guys I get to coach every day is my guys. I do think we're pretty good." ALEX'S THOUGHTS: He seems legitimately confident in finally having a group of players that he has brought on and begun developing.

- Sark says the team has really good playmakers when asked what can be "elite" on the team. Mentioned the WRs, Jaylan Ford, JT Sanders and .... Jalen Catalon. ALEX'S THOUGHTS: Whoo, sounds like Catalon has really been making waves for him to be brought up unsolicited along with the rest of those guys.

- Will Matthews asked about his vibe and the vibe on the team: "I'm not the biggest fan of July sports. Now that it's football season, I love that." Says the team is fun to be around; "we can work AND have fun." ALEX'S THOUGHTS: Sark hates the sports doldrums of July as much as the rest of us. One of us.

- Roger Wallace asked about the Commissioner's comments about Tech hopefully beating Texas: (good Q) -- Sark said it was telling that he got a letter from the commish *about sportsmanship* the day before he made those comments. Said he doesn't think the commish is going to be having Thanksgiving dinner with the team here in Austin. ALEX'S THOUGHTS: Boom. Screw him and screw the miserable Big 12. Good riddance once this season is done.

- Chip asked what Sark feels BEST about: "That we're a team," he said. ALEX'S THOUGHTS: As solid a base to start from as you could hope for, I suppose.

Let's see what happens.
