CLIFF NOTES: Texas continues its signing day momentum with adding do-it-all Grand Prairie athlete Savion Red to the class.

Rankings: Rivals rates Savion Red as a 5.5 three-star prospect in the 2022 recruiting class. The 247Sports composite has Red as a three-star prospsect and the no. 185 wide receiver prospect in the nation. The On3 consensus rankings sees Red as a three-star prospect and the no. 183 wideout in the class. ESPN also rates Red as a three-star prospect.

Key offers: Baylor, SMU

Evaluation: Based on recruiting rankings, Savion Red is a prospect that Texas is going to need some time to develop on the collegiate level. The former SMU commit opened up his recruitment following the coaching change, and Texas quickly threw out an offer before getting him on campus for an official visit. On the field, Red lined up everywhere for Grand Prairie. The Gophers used his talent in as many ways as they possibly could: at quarterback, receiver, and on the defensive side of the ball.

Versatility is what stands out about Red. He excelled at whatever was asked of him on the football field, making an impact at several positions. Texas is recruiting Red to play running back on the 40 Acres. He is a tough, hard-nosed runner that demonstrates impressive contact balance. Red rarely goes down on first contact and has multiple plays on his tape where he breaks tackles and gets big gains. He is a shifty player with short-area quickness. A multi-sport athlete, Red also excels on the basketball court.

Why it matters: Texas has a lot of talent at running back on the roster, but the Longhorns wanted to add two backs to its 2022 class. Red joins Klein Cain’s Jaydon Blue in the backfield for this class. Steve Sarkisian has had a lot of success with players that can fill multiple roles, which makes sense why they targeted the Grand Prairie standout.
