Cliffs notes: It didn’t take the Longhorns and Tom Herman 24 hours to land a commitment following Saturday night’s impressive win over USC. Derrian Brown, a 2019 running back that visited this weekend, became the 16th member of the 2019 class when he committed.

Rankings:

Key Offers: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oregon, Tennessee, and Penn State are among the schools that offered Brown.

Evaluation: Listed at 5-10, 180 pounds, Brown is a talented, Rivals250 running back that can do a bit of everything. He runs with more strength and power than his size suggests, and has no issue running between the tackles. What might be most impressive is his lack of wasted movement, and his pad level; Brown hits holes quickly with solid vision, and gets downhill quickly even when he gets to the edge.

Brown also shows impressive ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, and profiles a potential three-down back given he’ll also have the strength to handle pass protection roles. He’s not going to be the fastest guy on his future Texas teams. But he has plenty of speed, can pull away from defenses to turn good runs into great ones or make defenders miss, and accelerates quickly even in tight spaces.

Basically, he looks every bit of a solid four-star, and one of the best running backs in the nation.

Why it matters: This is another big recruiting score for Herman and company, and another talented out-of-state product from a hotbed area. Plus, Brown is a talented back that fits what the Longhorns are looking for in the similar way Keaontay Ingram did when he was a recruit.
