Cliffs notes: The Longhorns added their ninth commitment to the 2020 class, and it’s a huge one. Cypress Ridge defensive lineman Vernon Broughton just announced his decision.

Rankings:
In the recently updated 2020 LSR 100, Broughton ranks as the No. 4 player in the Lone Star State.

Key Offers: Broughton picked Texas over Ohio State and Texas A&M. He also has offers from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, USC and more.

Evaluation: Listed at 6-6, 285 pounds, Broughton is definitely a large young man. But what’s scary about him is he still has a young body that will really mature and take a better shape as he ages, gets into a college strength program, and gets older.

On the football field, he can do it all, and could profile at any position on a college defensive line because of his rare blend of size, developing strength, agility, athleticism, and quickness. The big fella also plays basketball as well, and the athleticism definitely sticks out on the football field as he moves out of his stance well, chases the ball and quarterbacks all over the field, and has impressive balance and body control.

Basically, he’s the top defensive lineman in the state, and one of the nation’s best players and talents. This is a huge get for Texas.

Why it matters: Texas went to battle with its in-state recruiting competitor, and one of the top national recruiting presences and won. Broughton has the potential to be a true difference-maker at the next level, and is truly one of the best players in the state that everyone wanted. It’s been a long, long time since Texas landed a defensive lineman prospect as talented as Broughton.
