The first day of Texas Longhorn football practice occurred on Wednesday. Here are a few notes and observations from practice.

--- It was 101 degrees when practice began at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Texas will host Rice at 2:30 p.m. in the season opener and it makes sense to get the bodies of players adjusted to being in the heat.

--- Here is the current quarterback rotation:

1st – Quinn Ewers
2nd – Maalik Murphy
3rd – Arch Manning
4th – Charles Wright
5th – Cole Lourd
6th – Joe Tatum

--- We saw quarterbacks throw simple passes to receivers and did not watch the team portion of practice. Each quarterback was consistent and threw catchable balls. There is not much to report from that group.

--- The first-string safeties during drills were Jalen Catalon and Kitan Crawford. In addition, Derek Williams was working with the 2s on Tuesday.

--- The players who fielded punts during the portion of practice we were allowed to watch were Johntay Cook, Ryan Niblett, Tre Wisner, and Xavier Worthy. Niblett fielded only one punt and dropped the second attempt when a sudden wind changed the ball’s direction.

--- Speaking of punts, Ryan Sanborn had displayed great hang time on his punts. If he punts like that consistently, Texas will limit the return opportunities of its opponents.

--- Here is the running back rotation:

1st – Jonathon Brooks
2nd – Keilan Robinson
3rd – Jaydon Blue
4th – CJ Baxter
5th – Savion Red

--- Speaking of Crawford, I love his ability to change directions during pursuit drills. He is very fluid.

--- Texas freshman receiver Johntay Cook displayed great upper-body strength during 2-on-1/stiff arm drills. Cook tossed a defender during that drill.

--- AD Mitchell is a dynamic receiver. My only nitpick is he dropped a catchable ball during drills with nobody covering him. Mitchell can get open, he is fast and will make plays for Texas. He had a small number of drops during the portions of spring practice we were allowed to watch. Hopefully, for Longhorn fans, receivers coach Chris Jackson can help Mitchell make adjustments to achieve his full potential.

--- Isaiah Neyor wore a brace on his right knee and backed up Xavier Worthy.

--- Texas defensive tackle Trill Carter seems a little shorter than his listed height of 6-foot-2. At 300 pounds, he is a tad smaller than most defensive tackles. Clearly, Carter was effective at Minnesota before transferring to Texas. However, Sarkisian likes big defensive tackles.

--- Vince Young, Michael Huff, and Derrick Johnson attended practice on Tuesday.

Alex Dunlap will provide you with a detailed report after he gets home and types his observations.
