FRIDAY RECAP

Three in a row

Texas secured a series victory with a 5-2 win over the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday afternoon. This was the third win in a row for Texas after dropping three to open the year. Texas took the lead in the first with an unearned run after an error in right field and a sac fly from Porter Brown. Indiana tied the game in a chaotic 5th inning that featured another wild throwing error from Zane Morehouse. After a critical 6-3 double play ended the top half of the 5th, Texas took advantage of multiple walks and errors from Indiana. The avalanche of mistakes from IU gave Texas a 5-1 lead and the Horns were able to hold on for the win after DJ Burke completed a multi-inning save.

Some thoughts on this win for Texas…

Defense was the difference in this game. The two teams combined for only 6 hits while the starting pitchers put up similar stat lines. Texas scored 3 unearned runs and won by… wait for it… 3 runs. As Texas learned a week ago, it’s tough to survive multiple errors in the same inning and the Hoosiers learned that the hard way in the 5th. Texas was not perfect on defense -- for the love of all that is good Zane Morehouse needs to lock the Derek Jeter/Kobe Bryant fadeaway jump throw in the closet and throw away the key -- but the Horns were able to recover from mistakes better than IU was on Saturday.

Garrett Guillemette continues to look very comfortable at and behind the plate. Guillemette seems like a natural leader and he is brimming with confidence in the box to start the year. He just feels like a kid that gets it, and the importance of that can’t be ignored on this young team. The transfer from USC is hitting .312 to open the year.

It was not a giant leap, but this was a step in the right direction for Zane Morehouse. The powerful righty got himself into some tough situations but unlike last week against Missouri, Zane was able to wiggle off the hook and strand runners on many occasions. It was nice to see Zane get the fastball up to 95 MPH a few times on Saturday and he flashed some great sliders as usual. There’s still a lot that Zane can improve, but he looks like he belongs out there.

DJ Burke came up huge in game two for Texas. With Heston Tole and Chris Stuart likely unavailable after Friday’s win, Burke entered after Duplantier struggled and never looked back. The transfer from San Jac does not have an intimidating presence on the mound nor does he have an overpowering repertoire, but he throws strikes, and that’s all he needed to do on Saturday. It was 91 MPH fastball after 91 MPH fastball for Burke against the Hoosiers. I’ll be curious to see if he is forced to mix in more sliders as the competition gets tougher.

UP NEXT

It’ll be Travis Sthele (0-1) on the mound for Texas on Sunday as the Horns look for the sweep of the Hoosiers. The game will start at 12 and can be found on LHN. One last game against IU before the big showdown with LSU on Tuesday.
