RECAP

That’s one.

Texas entered this weekend’s series against No. 6 West Virginia needing a sweep to possibly claim a share of the Big 12 title, and the Horns started the weekend with a 12-2 win over the Mountaineers in the opener. This was the most complete performance of the year for a Texas team that is looking to get hot at the right time. Baseball is indeed the ultimate team sport, but it was two players that set the tone for Texas in this one. Porter Brown led the offensive surge with three homers and eight RBI while Lucas Gordon locked down West Virginia across seven scoreless innings.

Texas led 6-0 after a five-run second inning and never really had to sweat from that point on. The Horns consistently added to the lead while Lucas Gordon cruised to his sixth win of the season. Lost in all of Brown’s heroics, Dylan Campbell extended his record hitting streak to 31 games with a bunt single in the first before adding a single in the fourth and an absolute tank in the eighth.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE TO NOTE

It was Downtown Porter Brown night at the Disch on Thursday. The Horns’ left-handed slugger sent three balls out of the yard and racked up EIGHT RBI in the opener of this big series. Brown opened his night by blooping a single to RF with the bases loaded in the first inning. This was a clutch hit by Brown after Guillemette struck out with the bases juiced ahead of him.

In his second plate appearance, Brown sent a 3-1 curveball from Yehl over the wall in RF for a three-run shot that gave Texas a 6-0 lead.

Just two innings later, Brown got Yehl again. This time, it was a 1-2 curveball from Yehl that Brown deposited over the wall in center. The 421-foot blast gave Brown a season-high 6 RBI and homer No. 11 on the year.

BUT HE WAS NOT DONE. Brown casually flicked a ball into the bullpen in left field for his third home run of the night and 12th of the season, giving him 8 RBI. With this oppo taco, Brown became the seventh Longhorn to hit three homers in one game. One to right, one to center, and one to left. In that order. It’s not supposed to look that easy.

When asked about his ability to smoke balls to every part of the park, Brown explained “when I was in high school all we did was hit oppo, we worked a lot on oppo and then when I got to college, I learned how to turn the oppo slap into a little bit of power and start driving balls.” The left-handed hitters in the Texas lineup handling left-handed pitching has been consistent all year and that has not been lost on David Pierce, “It’s huge because we play five left-handers in the lineup and it just gets to the point where they don’t even care if it’s left or right and that’s a good feeling because you’re not worried about the matchup. Our splits are flipped, we got Jack that hits lefties better, Porter probably hits lefties better, and Peyton definitely hits lefties better… and that’s just a good job in their planning and their work.”

Brown has been impressive against lefties all season, but Thursday was the icing on the cake in this department. It’s always nice to have a hitter come out in game one of a series and just completely put the offense on his back to the capacity that Brown did in this game. If Texas goes on and does something crazy this weekend, this Porter Brown game will be remembered for a long time as the thing that started it all.

LUCAS GORDON

If this was Lucas Gordon’s last start at the Disch, and he acknowledged that he was thinking that it might have been, he went out with a bang. After struggling a fair amount in his last two outings, Gordon gave the UT faithful a vintage Lucas Gordon gem. The formula is simple for Gordon -- inside fastballs that set up devastating outside changeups and backfoot sliders. This formula had eluded Gordon recently, but not on Thursday. Lucas stated “the big thing of throwing so deep into a game is having to control both sides of the plate… I think I’ve been working on arm-side so much that I kind of got away from my glove side fastball so Woody Williams, Chris Gordon, and I put an emphasis on that this week.” Gordon rode this sequence to 7 scoreless innings and 8 strikeouts. David Pierce emphasized how important this mix is for Gordon after the win, “he did a really good job of going down and away, and then he did a really good job of pitching all the way in. When you have that ability and then you have a plus changeup, it’s hard (as a hitter) to be good on a changeup down and away when you have to deal with the fastball in… his sequencing was outstanding tonight.”

This was a massive statement game for Gordon. It was fair to have questions about fatigue after his last few starts and the way he looked at the end of last season. The lefty from Cali had energy to spare and made the game look easy against one of the top lineups in the conference. This is the Lucas Gordon that Texas will need to beat top teams, so it was crucial to see that Gordon was capable of this type of outing against a top team this late in the season.

TAKEAWAYS

David Pierce said that he was a little surprised that West Virginia didn’t throw its ace Ben Hampton in game one, but wouldn’t really comment further than that. Odds are that WVU will be OK and this will be nothing by Monday, but it’s certainly a strategy that invites a bit of pressure. Not throwing Hampton gave Texas a better chance to win game one. Winning game one gives Texas momentum and reason to start to believe in a possible sweep. Is West Virginia getting too cute? Only time will tell, but the move was not lost on this Texas team and they got just a whiff of possible blood in the water on Thursday.

JJ Wetherholt entered the game with an AVG of .466 and an OPS of 1.359, but went 0-3 against Lucas Gordon. That gives more context to how dominant Gordon was, but also makes you think Wetherholt might be due for some damage on Friday.

This Texas lineup is just loaded with very smart and well-rounded hitters. Caleb Longley and Steve Rodriguez definitely deserve some credit for this.

If Lebarron Johnson Jr. can do the job tomorrow… we could have quite the scene on Saturday afternoon with Tanner Witt on the bump with potentially MAJOR stakes in play.

Things can change on a dime, but as of now, you have to feel at least decent about where this team is at. They might not win the conference or host a regional, but they have shown they can play great baseball and beat anyone. This was the best game Texas has played this year, which is a great thing to say this late in the season.
