FINAL
Texas - 0
TCU - 5
BOX SCORE

Winning Pitcher: Payton Tolle (4-3)
Losing Pitcher: Max Grubbs (4-3)

On a night when the Horns finally got a solid effort from their starter, they one again failed to provide any run support at all, mustering just 5 hits and zero runs. The defense made two costly errors, but they also made several poor plays allowing the Frogs to get runners into scoring position and/or score. Overall, a very frustrating night at the office against a TCU team that is very beatable.

Horns fall to 22-17 on the season and 9-7 in Big 12 play.

RECAP

TCU led the game off with a double from freshman Chase Brunson, who was then driven in by Kurtis Bryne when he hit a 2 out double down the RF line to give the Frogs an early 1-0 lead. In the Bottom 1st, the Horns went down in order, including a pair of strikeouts.

All was quiet in innings 2-5 as starters Payton Tolle and Max Grubbs battled back and forth, neither giving up an inch.

The dam broke though in the Top 6th when the lead off hitter Logan Maxwell, was hit by a pitch on the toe. Galvan was able to throw him out trying to steal 2B, but unfortunately Max Belyeu made a really poor decision, attempting to catch a sinking liner to RF on a dive. What should have been a 1 out single, ended up being 1 out with a runner on 3B. The very next batter brought him in to score as Luke Boyers hit an RBI single to make it 2-0 Frogs.

In the 8th inning, Andre Duplantier got two out, but then gave up a solo shot to LF to give the Frogs a 3-0 lead. The Horns got a lead off single from Will Gasparino in the Bottom 8th, but Rylan Galvan hit a sharp grounder to 3B where Chatagnier made an outstanding play to help turn a double, followed by Porter Brown striking out.

In the Top 9th, Shaw gave up a lead off walk, which always goes well. Shaw then doubled down by walking the next batter to put two men on an no outs, immediately bringing David Pierce to the mound and calling upon freshman RHP Easton Tumis. Lead off man Brunson dropped a perfect bunt to the left side that Tumis could not handle, loading the bases with no outs.

Tumis then gave up a deep sac fly to CF, but instead of scoring just one run, an errant throw to 3B allowed TCU to score two runs, making it 5-0. Game, set, match.

BIG MOMENT

In the first inning, the Frogs led off with a double. Max Grubbs was able to battle back getting two outs, but unfortunately gave up another extra base hit to TCU, allowing them to plate a run and take the early lead. That lone run would be all TCU really needed on the night as they blanked the Horns to start the series in Austin.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE

Sophomore Max Grubbs deserved more from his offense. He wasn't perfect by any means, but he did enough to put the Horns in a position to win. 6.1 IP, 8 hits, 2 runs, 2 earned runs, 1 BB, and 5 K.

TAKE AWAYS

The Horns continue to not play complementary ball. When they get pitching, they get no hitting. When they get hitting, they get no pitching. The bullpen unfortunately let the Horns down as well from a momentum standpoint, especially as David Shaw was a train wreck during his two batters faced.

If the Horns are not careful, they will not only lose the series but could get swept, which would put them way back into the bottom half of the Big 12 standings.
