BOX SCORE

Winning Pitcher: Ace Whitehead (4-0
Save: Cade O'Hara (1)
Losing Pitcher: Louis Rodriguez (3-2)

True to form, the Horns got early production from the offense, Ace Whitehead was outstanding and despite an hour long rain delay, the Horns came away with a 7-0 win over the Frogs to tie the series.

With the win, the Horns improve to 23-17 overall and 10-7 in Big 12 conference play.

RECAP

In the Bottom 2nd, Max Belyeu led off the inning by hitting a liner down the LF line that just barely dropped in fair and then bounced over the wall for a ground rule double. Kimble Schuessler hit a screaming liner to the left side, but unfortunately right at 3B Chatagnier. Will Gasparino then lined an 0-2 pitch into LF for an RBI single to give the Horns the early 1-0 lead. Rylan Galvan followed that up with a walk, bringing freshman Casey Borba to the plate. Borba hit a hanging fastball into LF for an RBI single, putting runners on the corners with just one out. Fellow freshman Dee Kennedy then drew a walk to load the bases with just 1 out. Unfortunately the next batter, lead off man Jared Thomas struck out looking. Jalin Flores came to the plate, hitting in the 2 hole for the first time this season and hit a single to LF, playing both Borba and Galvan to make it 4-0 Horns. That prompted Coach Loos to make a pitching change, bringing in Chase Hoover. The first batter he faced was Peyton Powell who promptly hit a chopper to 1B that then hit the base and popped over the defender, allowing Kennedy to score, making it 5-0 Horns.

In the Bottom 3rd, Max Belyeu again led off the inning, this time reaching base with the hit by pitch, as he wore a breaking ball off the foot. Schuessler then moved him over to 2B by laying down a perfect bunt down the 1B line stopped perfectly on the line. Gasparino and Galvan both struck out back to back after that, bring Casey Borba back to the plate. On a 3-1 count, Borba laced a hit to right field for a double, plating both Belyeu and Schuessler to make it 7-0 Horns.

In the Top 6th, after a 1 hour rain delay, Ace Whitehead retook the mound for the Horns. The first batter he faced lined lined one into CF to put a runner on. Karson Bowen then stepped to the play and crushed a ball to LF, which happened to be into the teeth of the wind thankfully or else it would have been over the street. Max Belyeu, getting the start in LF in lieu of Porter Brown and boy did he come up BIG. On the ball that was crushed to LF, Max went to slide and slipped, but somehow kept his glove up and made an outstanding catch. Then he got the relay throw back in to and over to 1B to double the Frogs up.

In the Top 6th, Cade O'Hara came in to pitch for Ace Whitehead and closed out the game for the Horns, ending with a final like of 2 H, 0 R, 1 K. Not bad kid, not bad at all.

BIG MOMENT

If he had not caught that, it would have only scored one run, but, it was a very pivotal moment in the game that denied the Frogs any kind of momentum.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE

Going to split the award tonight as there are two individuals that deserved it.

Ace Whitehead. 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K. - Outstanding performance by the lefty, though he got some help from his friends.

Casey Borba. 3 for 4, 1 R, 3 RBI. - The freshman was inserted into the lineup and boy did he come up big! In the Bottom 2nd, he drove in a run and in the Bottom 3rd, he drove in two runs.

TAKE AWAYS

Back to back games, the Horns have gotten outstanding starting pitching. When you throw strikes, good things happen. I liked the insertion of Jalin Flores into the two hole because of the struggles of Powell and the amount that Thomas gets on base. Unfortunately tonight, Thomas went 0-5 and the Horns were not able to take advantage of the lineup. On the other hand, I thought Thomas played outstanding defense in CF. The addition of Borba was nice as he has mature at-bats and he knew the starting pitcher, having played high school ball with him and the TCU catcher at OLU. Never hurts to have that inside knowledge.

NEXT UP

Horns are back in action tomorrow (Sunday) at 1pm for the series finale against TCU to decide who wins the series.
