BREAKDOWN:

A massive series on tap as the Horns travel to the top Big 12 team in the conference. This is the first time the Horns have visited Norman since 2018 due to COVID and Oklahoma moving their 2022 series to Arlington to raise money for the program.

Currently, the Horns sit tied for 2nd place in the Big 12, just three games back from the Sooners. Unfortunately, the Horns are also just three games ahead of UCF who is currently in 10th place in the conference.

Depending on how some of the results go, the Big 12 could become a two-team race after this weekend, with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State having the opportunity to pull away. At the same time, the log jam in the Big 12 could become even bigger if a few teams are able to steal a series away from others.

If you are a pitcher, this weekend could be one to forget. Texas ranks 12th in the Big 12 in giving up home runs and Oklahoma ranks 13th (dead last) in the Big 12, but the Sooners have given up just one more home run on the season. I expect an offensive weekend though as the Dale plays small and the wind will be blowing out all weekend long.

If the Horns are behind late, the Horns are in trouble statistically and literally. The Sooners strength is their ability to throw a lot of guys, while the Horn statistically have scored the fewest runs in the 1st and 9th innings. Malachi Witherspoond, brother of Saturday starter Kyson will be the first arm out of the bullpen, while the emergence of Ryan Lambert has big huge for the sooners. In Lambert's last outing, he threw just 15 pitches, 9 of which were over 100+, plus he throws a tight slider as an out pitch making him dang near unhittable.

On the offensive side, Oklahoma got back two of their best hitters back this week as Jack Nicklaus and Johnspikerman are both back from injury.

The potential "x" factor for the weekend is also going to be at the catcher position. Can the Horns keep the Sooners runners in check on the base paths as Coach Willits loves to put pressure on opposing teams with their speed on the bases.

Just 13 games left in the season, 12 of which are Big 12 conference games. This is the 2nd to last away series of the season that the Horns have on the docket, though if they make the NCAA Tourney, they will most assuredly be on the road.

Here is a comparison of the Horns record through 42 games in a season during Coach Pierce's tenure at Texas. While the 2024 season is not the worst season under Pierce’s tenure, it is just one game ahead of where the 2019 team was.
