I have learned this: it is not what one does that is wrong, but what one becomes as a consequence of it.
~~~~~~~~~~~ Oscar Wilde
So how badly would we feel if we hadn't been caught? How genuine was our apology, if we continue to do the very thing for which we said we were sorry? The late Tim Keller warned that "Fear-based repentance makes us hate ourselves. Joy-based repentance makes us hate the sin." If we are to stake a claim to any measure of self-respect, we'd do well to (i) have some worthy values and principles that we believe in, and (ii) live by them.
If we persist in compromising those values, we will undermine our self-esteem, and do damage to the faith we thought we had in ourselves. We need to hold ourselves accountable, be candid with ourselves, and re-claim the ground we've lost.
Don't tell me; tell Him. For this day, I pray that we will make choices that align with our values.
Rise up, be strong and faithful, be at Peace.
Proverbs 28:13
