No, using the handle on your recliner does not count as exercise.

In The Picture of Dorian Gray, a man sells his soul in exchange for endless youth and physical appearance. Everyone marvels at how good he looks, forever young. Then a portrait of him begins to show the appearance of his inside. The once handsome face suddenly begins to show the effect of every act of wrongdoing. Eventually, the pockmarks and wrinkles and distorted features make the painting so ugly that no one can bear to see it. By the time he dies, the painting depicts who he has become. Outwardly he was renewed every day, but his inner self was wasting away.

We should be grateful for our bodies, our outer selves, and we should take care of them. Winston Churchill, who lived to be 90, once remarked that the only exercise he got was serving as a pallbearer for all his friends who died while they were exercising. We can do better than that, but these old bodies ("tents" as Peter called them) will wear out. Unlike Dorian Gray, the apostle Paul acknowledged that his body was wasting away, but was quick to point out that inwardly, we can all be renewed every day by our Faith. We'd do well to spend as much time on our inner selves---our souls---as we do on the outer shell. Heavenly body wash and shampoo are free for those who ask.

Blessings, lads and lasses, on this marvelous Sunday. Travel day for me; time to get going!
