The #4 ranked Texas Longhorns (30-4) face the Drexel Dragons (19-14) in the 1st round of the NCAA tournament. Drexel finished 7th in their conference but got into the NCAA tourney by winning the Coastal Athletic conference tournament with 4 wins in 4 days, winning three of those games by two points or less before they took down top-seeded Stony Brook, 68-60.
The Dragons have been very lucky on the injury front with 5 players starting at least 32 of their 33 games. I assumed they would be one of the typical undersized mid-majors who spread out the floor to jack up shots from beyond the arc but they only average 14.7 attempts per game (307th nationally) and hit 30.5% of them team. That's 39 spots above Texas at 346 (out of 349 teams) at 11.0 3-pt attempts per game, making 36.4%.
They seem to win a lot of close games shooting mid-range jumpers and keeping the score low by slowing down tempo. They averaged 57.7 ppg and gave up 55.1.
Drexel's Starting 5:
Vic should be able to keep his starters‘ legs fresh and get a lot of bench players some time in this one as Texas should win this by 30+.
