Texas (8-4) opens their Big12 conference season against TCU (9-2) tonight at 6:00 in the FEC. This will be the 48th meeting between the Longhorns and the Horned Frogs; Texas is 44-3 against TCU (21-0 in Austin).

The Horned Frogs' leading scorer is 5' 9" junior G Lauren Heard (Jerrod's little sister) at 15.6 ppg. 2 other Frogs are averaging double digits: 6' 1" G Kianna Ray (11.3) and 5' 10" G Jaycee Bradley (10.1). TCU's leading rebounder is 6' 2" F Michelle Berry with 5.6 rpg who has also been their most consistent threat from the 3-pt line, 7/15 (46.7%). TCU has 4 other players that are 6' 2"-6' 3" so they will have some size to throw at Joyner and Charli. TCU has had a slightly tougher time holding onto the ball compared to Texas, 16.5 turnovers/game vs 15.8.

The Horned Frogs' 2 losses have come against #12 aggy and Middle Tennessee State. I mention MTSU because it is the most recent landing spot for former Longhorn Rellah Boothe. Boothe suffered an ACL injury in November of 2018 and hasn't seen the court thus far this season. In addition to the #2 overall player in the 2017 class (Boothe), MTSU also has Tennessee transfer Anastasia Hayes (#7 overall in 2017) on the roster - the only other school with 2 Top 10s from that class is...UCONN.

Back to the Longhorns:
  • Sophomore C Charli Collier leads the team in scoring (15.0), rebounding (11.4), FT shooting (39/47, 83.0%) and double doubles (9). Her rebounding average is 11th nationally and she is tied for 3rd nationally in double-doubles.
  • Senior PF Joyner Holmes is Texas' second leading scorer (14.8) and rebounder (9.2) and is tied for 5th nationally with 8 double doubles.
  • Senior PG Sug Sutton is the 3rd Longhorn averaging double digit points per game at 10.3.
  • Karen Aston seems to have found her starting 5 in Sug, G/W Celeste Taylor (Fr.), F Jada Underwood (Sr.) Joyner and Charli with senior G Lashann Higgs coming off the bench first.
  • Promising performances recently from sophomore G Joanne Allen-Taylor and freshman G Isabel "Issy" Palmer have alleviated some of the depth issues this team had been dealing with in the backcourt.
  • The frontcourt depth issues won't be resolved this season but Jada Underwood's contributions across several statistical categories as well as her hustle has allowed Karen Aston to rest Joyner and Charli a bit more than I expected.
If Texas can keep at least 1 of the posts out of foul trouble and Sug/Lashann do not regress to their early season play on both ends, they should be able to extend that home winning streak against TCU to 22.
