The Longhorns (1-0) will have a very tough early season matchup tonight at UCONN (1-0). The Huskies lost junior G Paige Bueckers to an ACL injury for the season otherwise they’d probably be ranked #2. Texas is winless in their 9 previous matchups against UCONN but without Rori Harmon, I‘m not nearly as optimistic they’ll notch their 1st tonight. The last word on Rori was that she was day-to-day with an ankle injury. Despite Bueckers absence, UCONN has their usual stacked roster including sophomore G Azzi Fudd, the highest graded #1 HS player in quite a few years. For reference, as a HS freshman, Fudd was the top overall recruit regardless of class - ahead of the 2018-2020 #1s (including Bueckers). She put up 26 points in their game against Northeastern last week with 4 assists and 6 steals. One player on the current UCONN roster that Texas has faced is SG/W Lou Lopez-Senechal. She was on the Fairfield team Texas faced in the 1st round of last year’s NCAA tourney. She missed about 10 minutes of the game after getting hit in the face and cut but she still led them in scoring (17) and rebounds (5). Says a lot that Geno really went after her when she went into the portal and has her in the starting lineup.

If Rori isn’t available, Texas is going to need 3-4 starters to play almost perfect ball tonight to get the win. Look for a really good matchup at the 4 spot between Aaliyah Moore and Aaliyah Edwards. They have very similar games but Edwards has 1 more year of experience under her belt. It’s a big time game on national television but if it’s even close, Vic needs to rest Rori and have her healthy for the upcoming tournament in the Bahamas where Texas could face a few other Top 10 teams rather than risk exacerbating the issue and losing her for an extended period.
