Here's a look at some notes compiled by the Orangebloods staff at today's first practice. I'll add more notes as they come in.

1. Texas Coach Charlie Strong said his team would look the part, but it would need to put it together mentally during his media availability on Friday. After having the opportunity to see his team up close, Strong was not lying about looking the part. Nearly every player on the team looks like they have been hitting the gym all summer. It is hard to find a player who isn't cut or ripped on the team. Even the offensive lineman appear to be in great shape. They may not be as physically defined as the wide receivers, but the physical improvement is obvious. Pat Moorer definitely worked with the guys in the off-season.

2. Tyrone Swoopes and Shane Buechele shared first-team reps and it was essentially a 50-50 split between them. Swoopes was usually the first guy to take a rep in every phase of practice today among the quarterbacks, whether it was in team drills, one-on-one drills or seven-on-seven.

3. Want to know what the doghouse for Kai Locksley looks like? Locksley spent most of Saturday's practice on the sidelines with walk-on quarterbacks Logan Vinklarek and Trey Holtz. He was not in the huddle with the other scholarship quarterbacks during individual and team drills. Clearly, Locksley will not be an active member of this year's team.

4. For the most part, the defense worked in its base 4-3 package for most of the day and ran very little nickel in day one.

5. The first-team defense looked like this

DL: Bryce Cottrell, Poona Ford, Paul Boyette and Naashon Hughes
LB: Anthony Wheeler, Edwin Freeman and Malik Jefferson
DB: Davante Davis, Holton Hill, Dylan Haines and Jason Hall

6. The second-team defense looked like this:

DL: Quincy Vasser, Jordan Elliott, Chris Nelson and Charles Omenihu (took some reps with the first-team defense in team drills)
LB: Breckyn Hager, Jeff McCulloch, Demarco Boyd and Cameron Townsend all rotated.
DB: Kris Boyd, DeShon Elliott, Kevin Vaccaro and Sheroid Evans

7. True freshmen Donovan Duvernay, and Brandon Jones mainly worked with the third-team defense today.

8. The first-team offensive line looked like this:

LT Connor Williams, LG Patrick Vahe, C Zach Shackelford, EG Kent Perkins and RT Tristan Nickelson

9. The coaches have moved Ronnie Major to right guard. Brandon Hodges moved to right tackle and worked primarily with the second-team. Denzel Okafor worked some with the second group at right tackle, but mostly shared third-team reps with Patrick Hudson. Jean Delance and JP Urquidez worked at left tackle, with Delance mainly working with the twos. Garrett Thomas is also working at left tackle, but is behind the two freshmen. Elijah Rodriguez worked as the second-team left guard. Jake McMillon was the only player taking reps at center behind Shackelford.

10. New Texas kicker Trent Domingue missed a few kicks, as the wind seemed to be a factor. According to Alex, his leg strength isn't quite elite and he seemed more comfortable inside of 40 yards.

11. Alex also notes that he believes Kirk Johnson and Davion Curtis looked a little more explosively fast than Devin Duvernay

12. Sheroid Evans was the most physical player on the field today and he might have been going too hard in a non-full contact practice.

13. Reggie Hemphill, Armanti Foreman, Petey Warrick, Devin Duvernay and Holton Hill all worked with the punt return group

14. D'Onte Foreman is listed at 249, but he doesn't look it. Looks closer to 240. Also had a nice play in team drills on a catch out of the backfield.

15. Per Alex, Armanti Foreman was the most impressive receiver on the field today.

16. Tristan Houston broke a long touchdown run in team drills on a draw play.

17. Here's a breakdown from the one-on-one drills between the wide receivers and defensive backs:

* Holton Hill closed quickly on Collin Johnson for a win.
* Armanti Foreman burned Kris Boyd down the field, but couldn't come up with the catch.
* Dorian Leonard beat Evans deep, but bad throw led to an incomplete pass.
* Devin Duvernay ran right by P.J. Locke for a TD on a vertical out of slot.
* Holton Hill locked up Collin Johnson on a short in-roue, but Johnson used his body to make catch.
* Deshin Elliott beat Reggie Hemphill.
* John Burt beat Davante Davis on a shallow in.
* Armanti Foreman beat Kris Boyd on a hitch.
* Sheroid Evans with a pick on an errant Tyrone Swoopes throw.
* Brandon Jones closed on Devin Duvernay while covering the slot to break up a hitch.
* Eric Cuffee undercut a Lil Jordan Humphrey route for an interception.
* Davante Davis read John Burt's slant like a book and the quarterback didn't even bother to throw the ball.
* Armanti Foreman beat Kris Boyd again.
* Reggie Hemphill beat Jason Hall.
* Jake Oliver beat Jason Hall on a play when Hall put himself in good position, but a better pass to Oliver beat him.
* John Burt just smoked Davante Davis, but couldn't make catch.
* Dorian Leonard beat Sheroid Evans again.

18. Here's a breakdown from the seven-on-seven drills:

* Shane Buechele hit Lorenzo Joe on a deep ball. Joe had a nice, subtle little push off.
* Buechele forced a ball into coverage that was intercepted by Dylan Haines.
* Davante Davis had a nice finger-tip breakup to prevent a Lil Jordan Humphrey TD.
* Tyrone Swoopes hit Reggie Hemphill for huge gain on wheel route out of slot.
* Buechele hit Burt on vertical for big gain.
* Andrew Beck beat Anthony Wheeler down the seam and caught a nice ball from Buechele.
* Anthony Wheeler intercepted Tyrone Swoopes
