I had this conversation with Travis Galey last week before the ISU game.
No one has to agree with me, but I'm just curious if this line of thinking has ever crossed anyone else's mind.
Here was the message and "argument" I made.
.......
Remember my question this morning about whether lineman block harder for some running backs?
I start with the fact that a players "stamina" and "effort" are two different things.
I think of each player like a battery. They start the game with 100% stamina and then depending on the position they play, and how they are built, determines how much of their "battery/stamina" will be left by the time the game is over.
Stamina is going to slowly drain over the course of 4 quarters on its own, but the amount of effort on any given play can either drain it more quickly, or less quickly.
My point is that it is impossible to give 100% effort and energy every single play.
They have to "pick and chose" their battles in order not to wear themselves out to fast
That means that there are going to be plays where a player decides to give a little bit less in order to save their battery.
For a receiver, who's battery obviously lasts longer than someone like linemans, they might decide to take a break or lower their effort on a play where it's a run to the opposite side of the field, etc.
A lineman however is much more involved in every snap. So when would be the time to give a little bit less effort? And I'm not talking about going down from 100% effort to 20%. I'm talking about just maybe a %15 decrease in effort on a play.
As I said, I have always been convinced that those effort breaks by lineman seem to occur on something like 2nd & 4, when a second string RB is in. That tiny, not perceivably to the naked eye decrease in effort might be the difference in a 6 yard run vs a 3 yard run. It might be the difference in driving the defensive lineman off the line, vs just standing him up and blocking him.
You surely understand what I am saying?
I mean if Baxter ends up having his first 100+ yard game, what are we going to do, contribute it to him "finally getting it after week 11?". That's silly to me, to me it would obv be because he got 1st string RB blocking from his line the entire game.
Thoughts?
