Cliff-notes: The Tom Herman era in Austin provided its first firework in recruiting on Monday with a commitment from Langham Creek running back Toneil Carter, filling both a major need and adding the type of big-time prospect that could kick-start some late recruiting momentum for the Longhorns.
Key Offers: Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, Georgia, LSU, Michigan State,, Oklahoma State, TCU, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Wisconsin.
Recruiting rankings: Carter is regarded as a low four-star prospect by Rivals and ranks as the No. 15 running back and the No. 195 overall prospect in the nation from the 2016 class. He's ranked as a mid-four star prospect and the No.20 overall prospect in the state in the recently released Lone Star Recruiting 2017 Top 100.
Scouting report: Listed at 6-1, 200 pounds, Carter's skill set as a running back is in the mold of a young Selvin Young, with perhaps not quite the type of top-end speed that Young brought to the table before injuries might have taken a step away from him. A powerful back that has the ability to run through defenders, the thing that makes Carter potentially an All-Big 12 type of running back is his ability to break down guys in space/one-on-one situations, creating explosive plays in the process because of his plus-speed. When he gets his shoulders square and just a little bit of steam, he's a threat to score from anywhere on the field. There's not a lot of flashiness to Carter's game, he's just a one-cut, down-hill runner that checks off a lot of boxes on the scouting report.
Why it matters: You can make a strong case that the running back position is suddenly the biggest need in this class and a big part of filling that need just occurred. It's easy to see Carter emerging as a two-deep player pretty quickly in the Tom Herman era.
On top of that, this serves as a calming pill to all of the Texas fanatics that were worried that recruiting was in the toilet because Herman hadn't sprinkled magic dust on a Rivals250 level prospect.
