After watching tonight's game in its entirety, Texas needs to make up a lot of ground.

Need a big time upgrade to be at the level I saw tonight:
QB: I hope Kai is the answer. Otherwise, our QBs this year aren't the answer.
OL: We will be better, but, not good enough.
DL: Need a lot more quality and depth.
LB: Malik is great but, we need more talent at the other spots including quality depth.

I think we will be elite or close to it for the 2016 season in the following:
RB: Foreman and Warren are excellent.
WR: I believe we have speed and playmakers here.
DB: We were awfully young this year, but, their playing time will payoff. I think they will perform at a high level.

I'm afraid you're right.

Looks like 3 years before we have the talent and depth Bama and Clemson have. Maybe 2 if everything breaks just right.

We need playmakers at DE and DT, another LB, and a ball hawk at safety. On O, we need a QB, TE, RT, and Center. That's a lot to even be in the playoff picture, much less capable of playing with Bama or Clemson. And then Bama wins the game in the kicking game. Blocks a FG, successful onside kick leads to 6, and kickoff return for 6 and then win by 5. Clemson got beat in the one place you never expect.

We have a few guys on the level of what I saw tonight. Most were freshmen. Burt, the Foremen Brothers. Eventually Williams and Vehe might be at that level.

On defense, Milik is already on that level but he has a lot of growing to do. Our DBs are young but we have about 4 guys with real NFL ability back there. Right now we have nothing on the Dline that comes close to what I saw last night.

But also remember, in 2003 we weren't much better than we are right now. Two years later we are winning the MNC. The biggest difference is, we don't have a Vince Young.

Burt? No damn way. The Foreman bros wouldn't play for either team last night

The Horns have some nice pieces, as mentioned above. But it begins and ends with the QB. Clemson had no business being on that field, but they had the QB. Sadly, the Horns will be having this same conversation next year. Let's hope Buechele is the answer.

I agree with your first two points, but 2015 is not 2003. We were coming off back-back 11-2 top10 finishes with Simms in 2001/02. In 2003, we fell to 10-3 (10-2 going into bowl). And we were winning 10+ after Vince. But we still had a loaded NFL roster in 2003 - Williams, Ced, DJ, Vasher, etc.. In 2014/2015 and going into 2016, we aren't ranked, we aren't sniffing other votes, we are fighting tooth and nail to just be bowl eligible. Though if things fall into place, a playoff in 2017 isn't far-fetched. It's happened before - think of OU in 1998 to 2000, USC 2001 to 03.

OP is missing a very integral piece... does anyone realistically think that Charlie could hang with either Dabo or Saban? The on-side kick was well thought out and executed. (How many fake punts or field goals have we attempted under Charlie?). Then look how Joey Freshwater instituted a lot of pre-snap movement to get the Clempson defense shifting and off balance. Bama blocked a field goal (something we haven't done under Charlie), ran back a kick off for a touchdown (have we done that under Charlie), successfully kicked an on-side kick at an unexpected time (we haven't attempted that). The attention to detail exhibited by the Bama coaching staff was very impressive. And God help me, I hope I am so wrong about this... but Charlie and his staff (yes, I know, new coaches this year)..l have not shown this attention to detail, especially when it involves special teams.

Hell, look what Briles did at Baylor. He basically revamped his offense and made it a wildcat offense for the bowl game. This is the first time that a college team has set the all time bowl record for passing one year... and the very next year, set the all time bowl record for rushing yard. Again, smart coaching. You can say Briles is a prick and I would agree 100% with you, but the man knows how to plug in his type of players and get them to perform.

I hope I am wrong about Charlie and I am dining on crow a la orange by this time next year. But, we shall see.

I feel it is important to give Charlie 3 years minimum. Next season is crucial to lay to rest the doubts that have been created over the last two years. Based on performance thus far, you and others have a very legitimate gripe. However, I will point out that nobody is on Nick Saban or Urban Meyer's level. Some are close. Yes, they are beatable here and there, but not really over the long run. Charlie may not ne Saban but , neither are 99% of other HC.
