For the last 62 years, my Dad has spent the 2nd Saturday in October at the Cotton Bowl rooting for the Longhorns at the Texas-OU game. He has seen them all - from Bud Wilkinson and Barry Switzer to Bob Stoops. From Darrel Royal to Mack Brown. He's cheered for Tommy Nobis, Earl Campbell and Vince Young, and booed Billy Simms, the Boz and Sam Bradford. Some years UT won; most others OU was on probation. But no matter what, he has gone to the game. Both teams may be struggling this year, but let me tell you something --- my Dad has his tickets in hand, the parking pass ready, and tomorrow, my old man will be going to NUMBER SIXTY THREE IN A ROW! My Dad didn't even go to UT, but I can guaranty you one thing - if you called him right now, he would answer the phone: Its Friday, October 7, and OU still sucks! So put aside the Herman talk, the defensive struggles, and any thing else causing you angst, and join my Dad at the greatest spectacle the State of Texas has to offer -- Hook'em Horns!

Homework assignment if I may be so bold. Your dad, a corn dog, mustard, in front of big tex---- photo. Post here then blow up, frame and adorn it on your office wall. You'll thank me for it.

How does he get his tickets? My parents started going to UT home games in the 60's. Donated to the Longhorn Foundation. Apparently not enough to get OU tickets every year. They would draw some years but not others.

The search for tickets is where the funny stories come from. Initially, my great aunt owned a small town newspaper outside of Dallas. In the 1950's, the State Fair used to send her tickets to the game plus the State Fair Musicals so that my aunt would give a good write up in the paper for publicity. She had no interest in going and gave them to my Dad and his college roommate. Can you imagine? They took their dates, who turned into their wives. After my aunt sold the paper, it got dicey. In 1976, during the election, President Ford announced he was coming, and always the politician said that he would sit on the UT side for the first half, and the OU side for 2nd half. The boys sent the President a letter offering to keep his unused seats warm each half. Didn't work, but they got an autographed photo out of it. A few years ago, they stumbled into 50 yard line seats for only $50 a piece. They couldn't believe their luck. Only after they were escorted out by uniformed police did they find out the tickets had been stolen from a big donor, who wasn't pleased. After pleading (and maybe even crying), they were given fold out chairs in the press box. Its because of this game, and watching my Dad's adventures over the years, that I became a "T-Shirt" fan. Not really sure if that's a derogatory term, but I will be there with my old man in my T-Shirt cheering on the Horns tomorrow. Nothing beats the tradition of this rivalry or the setting at the State Fair.
