When the US Military pulled troops from the Italy campaign for Operation Dragoon, an attempt to take Marseilles, those troops were replaced by, among others, the only black combat outfit of the WWII: the 92nd ID. In service of their country they continued the drive in Italy and fought valiantly, capturing 20,000 German troops, and garnered 2 Medals of Honor.

“For their accomplishments, the 92nd earned more than 12,000 decorations and citations, including two Medals of Honor, according to the 92nd Infantry Division’s World War II association.”
