AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas sophomore wide receiver Cayleb Jones will transfer, the school announced Wednesday night.

Jones had been suspended from the program since March and is seeking an opportunity to restart his career elsewhere.

"We want to thank coach Brown, coach Wyatt and all of the staff for everything they've done for Cayleb and our family," his father, Robert Jones, said in a statement. "We've really enjoyed being a part of the Texas program, but we've talked about the situation as a family, and we think it's best for Cayleb to get a fresh start and transfer to another school. We know he will miss his teammates and playing for the Longhorns, but we believe this move is in his best interest."

Jones, an Austin native, recorded two receptions for 25 yards in 11 games as a true freshman and potentially was in line to start for the Longhorns this fall before his suspension.

The suspension was handed down March 12 after Jones was charged with felony aggravated assault for allegedly hitting and breaking the jaw of a Texas tennis player. Those charges were dismissed and reduced to a misdemeanor in April.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound wide receiver has not been working out with the Longhorns this summer and had planned to rejoin the team in August for fall camp. Texas coach Mack Brown had already announced Jones was suspended for Texas' Aug. 31 season opener against New Mexico State.

"We've talked to the Jones family and realize this was a very difficult decision," Brown said in a statement. "Cayleb is looking for a fresh start, and we understand that and are appreciative of everything he did for Texas. We will support him as he moves forward and wish him the best of luck in the future."

Jones was an Under Armour All-American and ESPN 150 recruit at nearby Austin High School before joining the Longhorns. He is free to transfer to any school after receiving an unconditional release from his scholarship.
