Now let me preface this by saying that this is not a post taking a shot at Texas, it's coaches, etc, this is more intended for my friends like Scholz etc. who swore this stuff never took place on the 40 acres and who ribbed me continuously for sooner player indiscretions, of which I ALWAYS took as a good sport. This stuff happens at every school but I would love for Scholz and those of the same ilk to comment here and consume a little crow...https://www.si.com/college-football/2017/08/18/chris-simms-paid-boosters-college-football-texas

I don't doubt at all what Chris Simms is saying, and I think that was and still is very common in college sports all over the country. The one thing that I do believe is that Texas wasn't, or isn't on the level of Oklahoma, SMU, Miami, the $EC schools, etc when it came to providing players with benefits.

Bell, picture this:

You're out on a date with your girl at a restaurant. You ask the waiter for the check. The waiter says, "Sir, someone has already paid your check and wishes to remain anonymous. Hook'em Horns!".

You're downtown with your boys having some fun. A local bar owner knows who all of you are and invites you into his bar. He has the bartender hook you up with some free drinks and then he stands outside and let's people know he has Texas fb players in his bar that they can go in and drink with. His foot traffic increases for the night and he sells more drinks and gives a few free ones away. At the end of the night you walk out, owner shakes your hand and invites you to come back next weekend.

This stuff happens all the time. Period.

Agree and I totally get that, I'm just pointing out to guys like Scholz that players literally accepting money from boosters happens everywhere. Colt's wife had previously mentioned this very exact thing happening and Scholz et al were too much of a homer to even fathom it could be happening at their own school. I heard it all from him, "How would she know?", "Mack wouldn't allow", "only recruit good kids" etc. I am really looking forward to his return one day=)roll Anyone else I wouldn't really care out but Scholz went so far with it, it can't be ignored.

I always assumed he was messing with you to get under your skin or live rent free in your head. (Of course, I need to credit @utisdabomb for the "in your head" reference). :)

Look, when someone does something like that for an athlete, two things happen:
1. The kid is caught off guard and no teenager wants to say "no" to an adult. Good kids are raised to respect their elders and when it does happen, it happens really fast. There's really no time to do the math in your head and go "if I say no, i'll look like a dick and it seems really important to this person to buy me this drink, or give me this gift"....... so it's just easier and more polite to take it, say thank you, and move on. You don't see kids get up in the face of a booster and say "Gimmie a briefcase full of money or I won't play here!"
We all called it "the hook up". We all had hook ups. There was a beer barn o the drag, back in the day, that the owner would sell us a case of keystone tall boys (24) for 5$. That was in the mid 90's. Think about that. A case of tall boys for 5$. Double Dave's near campus..... free pizza rolls and beer if we went in there and played pool for an hour. The crown and anchor......... they always took care of us. Gumby's would deliver free pizza, all we had to do was tip the delivery guy. I never paid for a ticket at the Dobie movie theater. Not one. There were literally a dozen bars we could drink for free. Just be sure to tip the staff. I won't get into the gentlemen's clubs hook ups we had, but let's just put it like this: Don King or DK to us regulars, was a HUGE football fan. He may have looked like Jesus christ, but he was no where near as forgiving. You always were on your best behavior in his club. Mind your manners and Don would hook you up......constantly.

So a guy handed Chris simms, the son of a VERY wealthy man, a hundo. Big fvcking deal.

Meh.... For how much of a rockstar Simms was before he became Mr INT, I expected some straight up Pony Express type goods. $100 handshakes happens to our highschool kids. Hell, I funded a few after parties with them at my 2A school & I wasnt even hardly recruited.

Did any of you see the movie "My All American"? There was a reference to Father Bomar in that movie. You either know, or you don't know.

no one was paying Chris Simms - what a moron. he wasn't ever good enough

I call BS. Simms was alright. There were politics involved and that is why he started over Major, but that's a whole 'nother story, for a separate conversation. One thing that Texas fans should always hold Simms in high regard is he owned and embarrassed aggy. Go back and look up his stats and watch game film of those games. It was pure gold.

Exactly. I don't know why people that love Major (I like him too) think that they have to hate Simms. His recruitment was the springboard for the recruiting roll that landed so many top level recruits. I hope some day he comes back to his alma mater without shame or juveniles in his face simply for being an young player trying his best. The dude was 26-6 at Texas.

Agree. Simms won a bunch of games and was definitely good enough to get drafted. To this day I still say Simms had the best arm of any college qb I've seen live. That guy could hum that ball. He had some interceptions in some bigger games but some of that may have been receiver fault as well. The guy was talented.

Met Chris Simms at the Superbowl festivities in downtown Houston. Took a pic with me and the kid while throwing up the Hook'Em Horns. Seemed like a nice enough dude and while I was there a few aggys were wanting to take a pic with him. He gave them some shit but still took the pic.

SEC is on a complete different level than anybody. I'm pretty sure I've never hear $100,000+ deals at OU that I've heard in the SEC at times.

Or aggy players getting hired by a dallas builder who was funded by HUD with federal money and they were supposed to be in dallas at the job sight but instead they were enrolled at summer school in college station........

That sort of deal?
