Anybody else watch the new PBS program on CTE? Or plan to watch Will Smith's new movie?

Of course. I think I have it. I mean, I can tell I'm not as mentally quick as I once was. I still have most of the answers but they don't just spring board into my mind as rapidly as they did in the past. But there are days when I sometimes just wake up hazey. It wears off of course but, I don't know, just a weird feeling some mornings.

And before the peanut gallery chimes in: I'm not just "hungover".

I have no desire to watch the Will Smith movie. I am
Sure they will make the NFL out to be some big bad monster.

My question is, the movie trailer shows actual NFL helmets, stadiums and even the shield. How did they get permission to use that?

We could remove all the protective gear and the players would be less likely to fling their bodies in the air like human missiles. But, they would probably have broken noses and missing teeth, like hockey players. More protective gear that players wear makes them feel invincible to injury and less risk averse on the field.

If they are showing official NFL items, then the NFL gave them permission. At this point it would do more damage to the NFL to attempt to fight a movie like this

Hockey and rugby are also dealing with concussion issues. They don't get the publicity of the NFL though. There is no solution of removing concussions from these games. They are violent sports it's always going to be an issue, it's just a matter of finding a degree of risk that acceptable.

Actually, I think women's soccer is as bad as anything. The problem there is heading. I don't understand why they don't ban it, replace with hit with closed fist like they used to do with volleyball.

Our brains aren't meant to be bashed into daily or at any time. It's not meant for boxing, MMA, American Football, Rugby, Hockey etc... but we love these sports and they'll stay around as long as we want them to. I have no issue with an athlete accepting the repercussions of any sport where concussions can occur but as long as they're made aware of the long term effects. Once they're made aware I don't see how anyone can complain.

I agree that as long as football allows players to hit others with their heads, and their heads hit the ground, the risk will exist. The only way to remove the risk is to play touch or flag football. I also believe that there needs to be a waiver that players sign, barring them from pursuing litigation (after stating the the risks).
