Strong has tabbed Arkansas defensive backs coach
Clay Jennings to fill the same position with the Longhorns, according to FootballScoop.com. Otis Kirk of Hawgs247, the 247Sports Arkansas property, also reported Jennings has accepted the job at Texas.
Jennings replaces
Chris Vaughn, a member of Strong’s original staff who the school was forced to part ways with last week. Vaughn’s potential involvement in the ongoing NCAA investigation of the Ole Miss program is why the Longhorns were forced to sever ties with him, sources told Horns247.
It was an unexpected situation, but Strong brought in Jennings quickly to replace him.
Jennings, 42, has served as Arkansas’ secondary coach over the past two seasons. Prior to his tenure in Fayetteville, Jennings spent seven consecutive seasons coaching in Texas as the cornerbacks coach at Baylor under Guy Morriss in 2007 before he began a successful six-year stint as the cornerbacks coach under
Gary Patterson at TCU.
The Texas ties Jennings has go beyond his time in Fort Worth and Waco. A 1996 North Texas graduate, Jennings coached at several small colleges before finding his way back to Texas as the secondary coach at Sam Houston State for two seasons (2001, 2002).
He spent two seasons working under
Art Briles at Houston (2005, 2006) as a safeties coach, but his greatest success came at TCU. Jennings was part of a defensive staff that coached the Horned Frogs to becoming only the third program to ever lead the FBS in total defense for three straight seasons (2008-2010).
Tevin Mitchel (Arkansas), Jason Verrett (TCU), Greg McCoy (TCU), Antwain Spann (Louisiana-Lafayette) and Keith Davis (Sam Houston State) are among the nine NFL defensive backs Jennings has coached during his career, a number tabulated prior to the start of the 2015 season.
As a recruiter the highest-ranked prospect Jennings recruited as 2016 Arkansas running back signee Devwah Whaley, an Under Armour All-America running back out of Beaumont Central. Jennings recruited the state of Texas for the Razorbacks and has recruited several different areas of the state.
Jennings made $320,000 during his final season at Arkansas. There has been no public information available on what his salary will be at Texas.
With Strong hiring Jennings his staff for the 2016 season is complete. Jennings will be the only new face on the defensive side of the ball while
Sterlin Gilbert (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach),
Anthony Johnson (running backs),
Charlie Williams (wide receivers) and
Matt Mattox (run game coordinator/offensive line) will take over their respective positions on offense.
