I always figure you put your best unit on the field to start the game. UT isn't playing good defense, so why would you defer and start the game behind, especially on the road? Since the UT offense is the team strength, why are we deferring w/o a good defense and allowing road crowds to get into and stay in the game. Doesn't the team that scores first usually win 80% of the games, and since Strong has a horrible record when he doesn't score first or lead at the half, why not take the ball if you win the toss? Deferring goes back to good defense and ball control offenses, not shaky defense and high scoring spread offenses.

I don't think it matters much. If you're good, you're good, and if you're bad, you're bad.

Add in the glaring fact that you try to gain an extra possession by deferring.

If you didn't know, I'll help you out, that's when we get the ball on offense back to back.
You don't get these if you play bad defense and can't stop the other team, which is UT and Strong's problem in his losses. His teams don't come from behind much. I am bringing this up because I want UT to win the rest of their games and I don't think Charlie pays attention to the details, which includes return game and this goes back to Louisville. Some FANS have already made up their minds it seems.

9 times out of 10 I'd say to defer.

In this instance, based on our history in Manhattan, based on the hostile environment-- Based on our youth-- momentum- poor defensive play- and our inability to show consistent play when trailing early- I say take the opening kick.

Take the opening kick, March it down the field, shove it in the end zone and take some pressure off the defense.

I was actually discussing this last week. If you had confidence that your defense was going to get a stop, defer. There is no reason to believe Texas defense is going to get a stop. Its a good bet that we are going to be playing from behind by deferring. Also, Texas has been really bad at offense in the 3rd quarter (except ISU), because Texas has generally been bad at making adjustments during the Strong era. Everything about that says take the ball. With that said...
KSU is not much of a threat on offense. They win by letting the other team make mistakes. Against KSU, and probably only KSU, I think deferring makes sense. They are going to punt the ball right back to us.

If you have no special teams then it don't make a shit, get your ass kicked in the beginning or at the end doesn't matter

Hook'em

Dallas is winning by taking the ball first and keeping their defense off the field and taking a lead. This takes the road crowd out of the game and keeps the home crowd in the game. Deferring is for if you have a good defense and can run the ball. Most Big 12 teams don't. KSU got lit up by OU after hanging in there, but OU did score their opening drive on pass to Perine, and he missed the rest of the game?

With these spread offenses and shitty defenses in the Big 12 I laugh my ass off and scratch my head when I see Stoops or any other Big 12 coach defer. If your defense is spotty to shitty like everyone in the Big 12 TAKE THE FREAKING OPENING KICKOFF and try to demoralize the other team right out of the gate. Do it before they can do it to you. Just my opinion

I agree with this. I hadn't thought about it too much, but, it seems to be a viable strategy for Texas in this particular season given the circumstances.
