--- Per a source close to the Arizona State program, Texas wide receivers coach/play caller Jay Norvell interviewed for the ASU offensive coordinator position yesterday.

Previous Arizona State OC Mike Norvell was recently named the head coach at Memphis.

--- I'm told the Texas offensive staff continues to go about its regular duties, including recruiting, and no final decisions have been made on who might be retained.

The way it's been described to me, the first priority is getting an OC on board and the assistant coaching positions will fall into place after that. Basically, the new OC will have a big say in who his staff will be and the current staff members will have a chance to talk to the new offensive coordinator before any decisions are made.

--- A couple coaching carousel notes that could impact things ...

We mentioned earlier this morning that Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley could be a strong candidate for the East Carolina head coaching job, and that could play into things if the Sooners decided to target Cumbie. Riley previously interviewed for the South Carolina head coaching job.

One person I spoke with this morning didn't expect that situation to impact Texas. Riley is VERY close to Ruffin McNeill, who was fired last week after six years as ECU's head coach. There's some thought that Riley and McNeill's friendship might present Riley from taking the ECU job, but one person I spoke with today said that issue could be resolved if McNeill gives Riley his blessing to take the job.

If that happens, and a second source I talked to felt Riley will stay at OU, the Sooners would be looking for a new offensive coordinator, which on the surface, could impact Texas/Cumbie. A source I spoke with today thought the Sooners may instead look to Cale Gundy, who currently is in his first year as the Sooners' inside receivers coach after 16 years of coaching running backs for OU. The thought is that OU basically moved Gundy to WRs coach to groom him under Riley on OU's passing game.

Of course, we may be putting the cart in front of the horse on that stuff, but it's worth noting just in case.

--- On Cumbie, this thing is moving quickly and I get the impression that the folks inside the TCU football offices aren't exactly being given step-by-step updates. Basically, this thing's been pretty quiet on their side of things. Read into that if you will.

--- I mentioned the other night that if Cumbie is the guy, keep an eye on Arizona State OL coach Chris Tomsen as a candidate to be on the UT staff. One other name to file away ... Texas Tech RBs coach Mike Jinks. Jinks (who was at Cibolo Steele before joining the Tech staff) and Cumbie coached together at TT in 2013. It's a hire that would make sense.
