The first half is in the books and posted. What a letdown in the 2nd quarter of squandering momentum. Let's take a look at the 2nd half and OT.
Incomplete 1 - After a quick connection on 1st down, Sark goes to back to back runs that put us at 3rd & 15. I was hoping Sark would not come out and try to force the run game in the 2nd half. Anyhow, UGA rolls this in to cover 3 and locks everything down. It's not a bad job by the pass protection. It's a good disciplined rush from UGA and they get Quinn to flush. This is roughing the passer if the standard is the call that was on Beck in the 1st half. Not in love with the play call as we had been making a living with deep overs. Only one route to the middle of the field is from the top and everything else to the sideline at the bottom.
Before this next one I want to add some perspective as to what's transpired. Bolden just had a nice punt return into UGA territory. Ewers has gone 2 for 2 this drive so far with a completion to Golden over the middle for 12 yard and a WR screen to Moore for 0.
Incomplete 2 - The trajectory of the throw here is the right idea. The ball placement is shit. Really bad throw by Ewers.
Sack 1 - We've had a WR screen pass for 0 yards, an incompletion with a terrible throw, and now the O-line takes their turn crapping their pants as Connor gets tore up by Walker. From a route concept there's nothing here unless Quinn has the time to try and hit Bond to the sideline. A mobile QB doesn't fix these problems.
That's it for the 3rd quarter. 2 possessions with the last one beginning at the very end on a 2 yard run from Wisner. 3rd and 15 and 3rd and 10 on both of the first two possessions. Can't win this way. Quinn opens the 4th quarter with a 22 yard completion to Golden. Defense couldn't get off the field.
Incomplete 3 - Corner blitz here and we miss the protection. Quinn misses another one here as I think he's throwing this away not having a clue Golden's "man" blitzed off the edge. I really like what UGA is doing here in man coverage. Traditionally the LB would have the back, but they switch this, and the slot defender takes the back. I think Quinn believes we are getting zone coverage and grounds this ball under pressure believing the LB is sitting waiting to jump the mesh like they did in the 1st game. Instead, we have man coverage with a CB blitz. The safety is taking Golden. We miss the protection, Quinn is confused, grounds the ball to what would have been an easy first down. Bad football.
On the very next play we go to the RPO and Quinn makes up for it by hitting Moore for the long TD.
UGA makes a long drive to take the lead utilizing the fake punt. We get the ball back with 4:29 to play and Sark opens with a run to Wisner for a loss.
Sack 2- I'm not sure how anyone could watch the tape of our RT in games against UGA and go, that's a top 15 pick. I'm just not. We'll have Golden coming open over the middle here on a deep over. 2 man route concept on 2nd & 11 with max protect. UGA brings 5 against 8 and Williams completely opens the gate. It's dead. Davis doesn't do anything to set his feet and keep his man in front, and while Quinn escapes, it doesn't even matter because there's another one right there.
Interception 2 - Well, this play has nowhere to go. The RT gets absolutely dominated again. Quinn needs to throw this ball into the UGA bench over Golden's head. Reserve the right to kick and try to change field position and instead it's a pick. Really bad football. 3rd and 17. OL fail, Quinn fail.
Defense rises to the challenge and gets a turnover. Screen set up right away that Wisner takes for 10 yards. We follow that with a run for 2 yards and then a false start on the RT on 2nd and 8.
Incomplete 4- The offensive line is just lost. 5 on 5 and we let one come free. This time it's on Majors. It's not hot. You have a hat for a hat. We have the shot to Moore 1 on 1 with a safety if we can just protect. Instead, the LB flashes in front of Quinn and he has to try and force the ball in to Golden. Batted down. Would have been a good time to hit the RB check down if Helm could pick up the block. I've seen comments that the O-line played better this game. I personally believe they played worse.
Regardless, Quinn connects with Moore on a must have 4th and 2. He then hits Moore again on a slant for 9 yards and Wisner picks up the first down with a run for 7 but rolls up Bond. The next play we get the PI call in the end zone on Wingo.
The stage is set now for Quinn to make the big time throw for the win. 1st down at the 14-yard line.
Sack 3 - I don't mind this idea from Sark trying to get UGA to make an undisciplined play with all the pressure happening right now. I just don't like the idea of a double pump fake with a back to the defense when our offensive line is having trouble blocking air right now. Still this is a double pump trying to get the LB's to chase the flats and open up the middle of the field for Helm. Credit to UGA. I know people are talking about Wingo being wide open, but this play is drawn up as Fake, Fake, TE, check down. I mean just watch Cole Hutson here. God bless him out there like a dancing bear. Looping linebacker is the one who F's this whole play up and he runs right by him. There aren't many plays draw up for an offensive lineman to do absolutely nothing.
incomplete 5- Ok Quinn let's make a play. Can we first point out the MF'n hold on Helm? UGA is going man to man here and you have a press corner at the bottom. Couple of issues I have with these routes. 1) Helm is held. 2) Moore should be breaking to daylight, not pressing this route down the field. Break to daylight is a big part of Sark's offense. I think we have some young mind's having a little bit of a choke moment going on. Golden at the top of the screen is a runoff, he's got soft coverage to the furthest part of the field. On Wingo, the CB does a great job forcing him back to help and this is the right idea by Quinn. Just too much juice on it and too high. A foot lower and we may be talking about Quinn making one of those game winning throws.
After this play we go into the fetal position and call a WR screen on 3rd & 15, kick the FG and make it. On to OT. Still time for Quinn to make that one big throw that puts him at the top of the heap with the greats when it's for everything.
Open OT with Manning running for 5 yards and we pull him right away? Whaaat? 5 yards might rank in the top 5 longest runs all day. Run it again! But we don't.
Incomplete 6 - And a dud of a play call with a throw away makes this a waste of a down. Let's speak to this though. It's cover 2 press man. Can one of our WR's win a battle here and help out?
Ewers throws a dime of a slant to Wingo to pick up the 1st down. 1st down at the 14. Somebody needs to make a big play.
Incomplete 7 - Here I am begging for the big time throw when the check down probably scores or at worst gets a first down as UGA forgot about the back. Split field coverage. Man at the top. Cloud corner at the bottom who's going to sink under the route by Davis. Quinn tries to force this ball in to Golden who's absolutely blanketed.
Incomplete 8- I'm gonna get killed for this one but this is a great throw in my opinion by Quinn. Pause the video from the endzone when the ball is being thrown by Quinn and look at the alignment of Moore's body, and then watch as Moore takes this route slightly more vertical than it needs to be. This is it, this is the touchdown throw we need. It's the little things. Moore just needs to run away from the defender. Any movement north and south gives the defender the chance to catch up and get in position to break up the pass. Run away, catch the TD.
And that it's. Total team loss from coach to kicker. Does Quinn need to be better... yep. Does the O-line? Yep. Do the WR's, yep. Does the play calling? Yep. Are there a lot of teams in the playoff who can do this to Texas? Nope.
Regroup, get better, go win it all.
