Fall ball has come to an end for the Longhorns as the World Series finished up Saturday afternoon in a 7 inning final game between the two squads. The scrimmage ended in an 8-3 win for the Orange squad (the original Orange Team from Game 1)

The two line score chart ended with the Orange Team posting 8 runs, 9 hits, and 1 error. While the White Team went for 3 runs, 5 hits, and 5 errors.

Pitching:

Pitching looked pretty good throughout the day, Morehouse had a tough second inning but was able to focus in and finish out the inning which deserves some props. Overall, this was a promising final outing for the pitching staff as a whole.

For the White team, RS Sophomore Zane Morehouse got the start. He lasted for 2.0 innings of work giving up 7 runs, 6 hits, and 3 walks in his time on the mound. In relief, Freshman LHP Ace Whitehead took over from left field to deliver 2.2 innings of work where he allowed 0 runs, 3 hits, 1 walk, and delivered a strikeout on Messinger in the 4th. RS Sophomore RHP Jace Hutchins closed out the final 2.1 innings of work, he gave up 1 run, 2 hits, and 3 walks in the outing, while recording 2 strikeouts on the day as well.

Over on the Orange team, Freshman RHP Joshua Stewart was the starter, delivering 3.1 innings on the day. In that time, Stewart allowed 1 run, 2 hits, and 5 walks on the day. He also collected 2 strikeouts in the game. In relief, RS Junior Daniel Blair stepped up in the fourth inning to handle 1.2 innings of work. He retired all five batters he faced, including a strikeout on Preston Hoffart. RS Freshman Travis Sthele took over for the entire sixth inning in which he allowed 2 runs on 1 hit. RS Freshman LeBarron Johnson Jr finished things up for the Orange Team as he handled the final seventh inning in which he allowed 1 hit, 1 walk, but also had an impressive final act to record a double play and end the ballgame.

Hitting:

In total, today's game featured 14 hits and 13 walks combined between the two squads. The bats were working well, getting plenty of liners into the outfield gaps which is excellent to see. The team also had some noteworthy effort, beating out a few tight tosses for infield hits in the game.

On the Orange roster, the starting lineup was the following:
1. Dylan Campbell RF
2. Mitch Daly 2B
3. Douglas Hodo CF
4. Skyler Messinger 3B
5. Murphy Stehly LF
6. Trey Faltine SS
7. Kimble Schuessler C
8. Cam Constantine DH
9. Cameron Dayton 1B

Constantine opened the game up with an RBI single in the second to bring in runners from 2nd and 3rd base. Constantine went 2/3 on the day with an additional single in the top of the third inning. Campbell contributed at the plate as well, going 2/5 on the day including his RBI single in the second to bring the score to 3-0. Campbell added on a stolen base in the game too. Murphy Stehly went 2/3 in the game with an RBI and stolen base as well.

The White Team lineup was as follows:
1. Austin Todd RF
2. Eric Kennedy CF
3. Ivan Melendez 1B
4. Silas Ardoin C
5. Gavin Kash 3B
6. Jack O’Dowd SS
7. Gage Wakefield 2B
8. Preston Hoffart DH
9. Ace Whitefield LF

Austin Todd continued to play at a high level going 2/4 on the day, including two stolen bases off of a wild pitch that got him over to third. The RBIs of the day came from Silas Ardoin’s sacrifice fly in the 3rd, Jack O’Dowd’s sacrifice fly in the 6th, and Gage Wakefield’s RBI base hit directly after O’Dowd’s at bat.

Orangebloods Spotlight:

Melendez was once again at first base today, he managed to get two walks in the outing but went 0/2 in full. Melendez had some solid plays in the field, but his overall flexibility on the bag is still in question and showed to be an issue at times today.

Rochman Grade: C, I’ll take someone getting on base twice from walks, but I still want to see more out of Ivan as a fielder if he wants to hold down the first base spot for the season.

Player of the Game:

Douglas Hodo III runs away with the MVP for today’s ballgame. The centerfielder was 3/4 including a walk with 3 RBIs on the day from a base-clearing double in the 2nd to expand the Orange lead to 6-0. Hodo’s impact wasn’t just at the plate, the outfielder made some impressive plays in the outfield to keep the White offense at bay.

Hodo was also awarded the overall MVP of the Fall World Series.

Outlook:

I think today was a great showcase of talent from both the hitting and pitching side of things. Overall, my critiques have only been to the standard of winning it all, which is quite a standard. However, it is certainly one the Longhorns should hold themselves to. As far as fall ball goes, there is plenty of reason for optimism when it comes to this program.

Up Next:

The team is done with fall ball and the attention now shifts forward to the regular season. Texas Longhorns have high expectations of returning back to Omaha come June, and we’ll be here at Orangebloods to cover their journey each step of the way with the first match 😄 of the season coming February 18th against Rice.
