The first Elite 11 practice has ended. To say things were uneventful might be a bit of an understatement.

The day pretty much consisted of receivers going through footwork drills, QBs playing catch with each other, some throws from the QBs to WRs against air and some QB/WR walk-through stuff.

There will be another practice this afternoon that was initially open to the media, but we were given word this morning that the workout is now closed. Rumor floating around the Elite 11 practice field is that part of the decision to close it may have been based on the fact that certain members of other networks (not Rivals) decide to stalk players at their hotel during check-in despite strict instructions that no media members were allowed at the hotel. Nice work, fellas.

UT commitment Sam Ehlinger is nursing a sore shoulder but it didn’t seem to impact his reps or his throws. Ehlinger threw the ball with good velocity and accuracy. In fact, I thought he was much more accurate than were a couple of the other QBs that he was working alongside (they had them split into groups all over the field).

In talking to Ehlinger after the morning practice, I’d say his listed height of 6-1 is pretty accurate. He’s far from the tallest QB at the competition, but I was a little surprised at the muscle mass in his upper body. Ehlinger has always had a stout lower body, but he’s already pretty filled out up top as well.

The competition should increase tonight and at tomorrow morning’s practice, but Ehlinger seemed to be comfortable and having fun at today’s practice.

Texas wide receiver target Omar Manning didn’t work out due to a lingering hamstring issue, which was a bit disappointing. Not sure if he’ll be able to give it a go tomorrow or at The Opening. Manning is very high on Texas and will be at the Under the Lights camp in a couple weeks.

Wide receiver Tyrell Shavers, a UT target who committed to Alabama this summer, was about what I expected in watching him go through drills. He’s very tall and lanky at 6-6 and about 200 pounds. He actually looked pretty good in the footwork drills they were putting the WRs through. He still has work to do to fine-tune his game and become a more consistent pass catcher, but he has some pretty natural tools to go along with his size and speed. He had a couple drops (most of the WRs did until they got in the flow of things) but overall he caught the ball cleanly and didn’t have to fight it the way some other guys did. Shavers tells me he’s solid to Alabama.

Waxahachie WR Jalen Reagor is another guy Texas had offered early. He’s committed to Oklahoma and in talking with him after the practice, he seems very happy with his decision. I don’t see Texas or anyone else getting involved in that one moving forward.

FYI, I’ll have more from Ehlinger and Manning posted a little later.
