Been wanting to go do some grouper fishing so started watching videos. Ran into this gem and just made me rethink grouper fishing. Maybe I’ll stick to bass.

That's pretty awesome but as an avid coastal and freshwater fisherman, i can tell ya they were set up for failure right from the start. I've caught a few while anchored at oil platforms. This way makes a helluva video though. Youtube dollas y'all!

1) they arent using the harness which makes a HUGE difference. If you aren't familiar, it connects to the eyelets on the top of the reel so you aren't supporting everything with your arms.

2) once they reel out the slack the guide slams the drag to like 95%. That would never happen. Too easy to lose your gear & fish that way.

3) they do make gunnel pads for a reason

4) some of them also have rod holders specifically aimed for large drop fishing.

Been fishing offshore just never for grouper and I figured this isn’t the way you would normally fish for them. But the size of them is crazy! Looks fun though! I fish mostly fresh water now since we have a private lake. Basically learned fresh water fishing on it. Fun! Never thought I’d be fishing for bass instead of trout and reds.

Caught a shit load of AmberJack and Grouper when on my rig offshore with rope and a hook welder made, put a bait fish and throw hook down on plate at bottom of rig and boom, catch Amberjack that takes 3 of ya to bring up, lots of fun , roll them in La hot sauce and mustard then cornmeal and hit the grease, damn good

Yeah they get huge. In the dead of winter giant bluefin tuna come super close to the NC Outer Banks shoreline and let me tell ya, those suckers are brutal too. A 300lb fish built for speed is a blast. We kept a few lbs each and sold the rest to a local market which paid for our $1400 guide boat and drinking money later. Fun experience.

Makes total sense. =)roll

I was 150 miles out, took almost a hr by Helo, its not bad on Platform, I worked on a jack up for about 6 months and transferred to Platform, had a Work boat hit one of the legs one nite in rough seas and we had to sleep on Helipad till they fixed it, had a workboat ancored out off the rig and the seas was big Mofos and next morn could not find workboat, they found out that during the night the seas got big and all that drill pipe shifted and it rolled over and sunk, divers found the boat , all hands in gally eating was died, if ya want a dangerous job them damn Rig and salvage divers are Pros, lot of them were Navy seals in Navy before they got out. they go way deep with mixed air and shit, now that's dangerous...lol

I stayed out for 3 or 4 weeks at a time made 15000, not bad, and the food is 5 star

Listen up Mr Clob94, you and I are just about the same age so I know you have that wizdom thing starting to creep in too. Might not listen much yet but we hear it.Just because we CAN do something, doesn't mean we HAVE to do it.

Seeing the sheer amount of incompetent losers I interact with in the oilfield on a daily basis, there's no way I'd want to be stuck on a tiny metal island living in a real life episode of jackass 24/7 30days at a time.
Someone's getting thrown over or I'm gonna be swimming open water for land.

p.s. leave my comfy heated deer blind out of this. I did it for the kids......think of the children clob! ;)

I'm dying fvcking laughing right now. A myriad of reasons.

Funny true story that I didn't know until my father's funeral 5 years ago--

In '68 my father, who was a petroleum guy, convinced my mom to move to Alaska because he was offered the job as the platform big boss in the cook inlet on a platform named the King salmon. Well the platform just NNE of them was named the Dolly Varden. Well, the dude that was put in charge of the Dolly Varden was this class room wiz kid nerd and he aparently was a smoker. Well the toilet in the command room had been leaking over and over again and was regularly out of order. So this dude used to simply step outside, have a smoke and whiz right off the edge of the platform.

So one night, early in the winter, they'd had their first freeze that froze over the water in the Cook inlet. So the story goes that super nerd needed a smoke and to relieve his bladder and out the door he goes to his normal spot to piss. He lights his cig up and whips it out and WOOOOSH--- a tearing gust of wind catches this guy and off the edge of the platform he goes. Now had this have happened in the summer time, homeboy likely would have survived the 60+ foot fall into the water though he'd probably have some broken bones to show for it. Unfortunately for him, there was a good layer of ice on the sea below and, well, he died with his dick in his hand.

My dad used to say to me from time to time when I'd do something stupid --- "boy, stop doing stupid shit or one day you'll die with your dick in your hand...".

It took him dying before I knew where that saying came from.
